If this trend continues then the Bengals may not have any players left. I guess teams are going to need to take a closer look at players character before drafting or signing them.

Another step in the right direction. Get rid of the cancer and then the lockeroom can once again focus in winning a championship.
Unlike the Pats, it is better to play the right way with the right attitude for the right reason; then to lie, cheat and steal to win at all costs and without class.
You can't teach class and you can't coach it; at this level you have it or you don't. Good on the Bengals for showing it; it doesn't matter if you are the best player in NFL history, if you spend half of your season suspended or in jail you won't be winning ball games.

Hmm..there has to be something going on here, since I don't get why they kept Odell through two years of suspension to cut him now. I don't mind the cleaning house, if anything the Bengals are one of the more "clean" teams (the bulk of the problem players are now long gone, and other teams have had plenty of issues since). Now they just have to deal with a certain receiver and they can look at moving forward.
As for Odell, its a shame, and I don't know what was so bad to cut him, but his "body of work" deserved it. That being said, I'm sure Jerry Jones will be calling his agent soon.

I'm not so sure he was as much of a cancer to this team as some of the other guys they've let go like Chris Henry. I think this is a function of the team having upgraded the LB position with Keith Rivers in the draft, not to mention their satisfaction with the talent they presently have on their roster. While you can't trust everything the media says, word is that the Bengals were afraid that Thurman would spiral downward following the death of his grandmother who was said to have had a tremendous influence on him. So I'm assuming his release served as a precautionary measure, which is rough. The NFL is a business though, so you can't really blame the organization. The question now is where will he end up and will he come with a renewed sense of urgency to perform to his talent level while keeping his off the field life in check? He was helluva player prior to his suspension.

The Bengals obviously expect Rivers as a top 10 pick at LB to step up and lead the defensive squad. While a fit, healthy, mentally ready Thurman would be an asset to this franchise (their LBs were awful last year although that stemmed from the D-line), if he is mentally or physically unprepared then he is just consuming roster space and potentially damaging the franchise.
I don't believe this is a question of removing him based on his inicidents but rather removing liabilities far in advance of the real preparations for the season and also granting him the opportunity to pursue a career at a different club in time for the 2008/9 season

The thing that surprises me about this is that Marvin Lewis basically said he was not happy with Odell Thurman's attendance during the mini camps.
The guy just had his only living family member die and that was the reason he was not there.
Why the club would wait sooooo long to cut him is beyond me! I really think that they just used this as an excuse because he was not in football shape and they did not feel like working with him now that they have Keith Rivers.
I kind of feel sorry for Thurman but of course he was the reason why this situation was presented to him in the first place. The guy has all the tools to be a good LB and hopefully he will get another shot to play.

I wonder if maybe Mr. Johnson was more mature and more of a role model for some of the young troubled rookies, the Bengals may not have had as much trouble. Do you think a recieving core led by Jerry Rice would have had this much bad publicity??? I know one thing, at least the leader of the Recievers would not be the one with the most unfavorable headlines.

Thurman will find a new home. I hope he stays positive and doesn't head down the wrong path as a result of everythung going on in his life right now.

its just another typical moron nfl fan that thinks every Bengals player has a criminal past. People, that was 2 years ago, get over it. In the 2 years since all of those arrests, the Bengals have been getting rid of all those problem players.
Chad's buddies must refer to all the idiots that have Drew Rosenhaus as an agent. It seems to be mostly his clients that are the ones crying for more money. TO, Javon Walker, Chad Johnson, Lance Briggs, Jeremy Shockey, Willis MaGahee, Kellen Winslow. All these have cried and whined about their contracts and the teams they play for, demanding trades, more money, or threating to sit out.
I see you are a rookie killerbees, but please from now on know what you are talking about before you go and post something stupid.

OK - lessee - my grandmother died 10+ years ago, she helped raise me and was a big influence on my life. I didn't spiral out of control, and you know something? I went to work Monday after the funeral, because I owed my employer that much.
Then again, I don't use it as an excuse for bad behavior. Professional athletes today need to understand, the rest of the world has just as many problems as they have, just a lot less money to deal with them.
Odell Thurman got more chances than any of us would have gotten had we treated our employers with the same utter lack of respect he did. Pardon me while a cry a river for his release - the problem is, someone will be dumb enough to put up with his s*it and sign him, just like they will do to any "troubled" athlete.
I use the term loosely. Model citizens unfortunately don't win NFL games these days. Man I miss Vince Lombardi, but then again, he had to put up with the boozers, so maybe things haven't changed that much.
Get a real job Thurman - you blew it pal. Sorry about your grandma, now be a man and get over it.
