CINCINNATI (AP)—Troubled linebacker Odell Thurman has been released by the Cincinnati Bengals, one month after he was reinstated by the NFL from a two-year suspension.
The Bengals said Monday that Thurman wasn’t meeting expectations. The Bengals are holding voluntary workouts in preparation for the team’s mandatory minicamp next month.
The move comes one month after the Bengals released receiver Chris Henry following his fifth arrest.
Thurman was suspended for the 2006 season by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after he skipped a drug test and was arrested for drunken driving. The suspension was extended through the 2007 season.
Talk about a guy with a ton of upside and no miles. I don't like the baggage, but we need a young LB and his price should be right. Also, with Willie retiring after this year my bet is that he would put the fear of god into any other LB if they mess up his fairwell tour. What do you guys think?

I think I am for this one. Like you said, he may come cheap and may want to show the Bengals that he can still play. I am not sure what, "hasn't lived up to expectation" means. Heck he has only been back a month. He hasn't played in almost 2 years, what type of expectation do you have. He has a new cast around him in LB's . I would like to scoop him up and let him play on special teams until he gets back to "expectation". It isn't like he cannot play, it is just he hasn't .

Tripp....u took the words right out of my mouth..........Romeo is a good coach who can get the most out of him.....players want to play for Romeo......I would love to see him.........in a Browns uniform.........But! aren't we always the ones on the losing end of deals like this......meaning the cheaters from Foxboro will get him on the cheap and he will go on to win 2 SB's and play for them for 7 years with no problem???
i think he would solidify the "D"
what say u fellow Browns fans?????

I say go after him.... I think we actually would be a place he might look fondly on... we play in the same division and he would play the bungles twice a year.. plus he could be another piece of the defense that would help solidify it... we got a new d line and with him paired with wembley would be dangerous.... he served his time and seems to be ok now... we havn't heard much about him since he got in trouble... go get him Phil....

You guys are acting like he spent the last two years training for his return. He was CUT by the Bengals for not being up to expectations, which means he is out of shape. His baggage is pretty nasty. I can't imagine a scenario where we would go after him.

I'm with geno on this one. Way too much baggage. This guy has been away 2 years and he can't even do something simple like show up for voluntary workouts? You'd think he'd be there, be in shape, and be ready to prove something. But no. I don't see Phil or Romeo wanting to risk infecting the locker room with a guy like this. Remember, Odell Thurman has history that dates back to his college days. I say stay away!

Not sure I agree you on this one richyett

So does Eric Wright!! I know he, meaning Thurman, has a history but look at most of the great ones, Marvin Harrison- recent, Jamal Lewis- during playing season and previous, T Owens, Reggie Bush, Pacman Jones, etc. You cannot let that stop you from putting some trust into a guy and let him prove himself.
Yeah the guy isn't going to be in football shape. He may be in shape for what we consider being in shape, but football, heck any sport, shape is a little different. Plus that is why you hold the preseason conditioning, to get them into sport shape.
I say we give him a shot with a 1 year contract that is full of incentives, if he doesn't seem to be working out, let him go. Andre Davis is on his down side and at worst, does it hurt to have a special teamer who has the ability to stand in because of previous starting experience.

It certainly seems like a double standard. Everyone wanted Wright cut ostensibly for being busted for the second time. Seems like a cop out (pardon the double entendre). It must have really been because Wright couldn’t out run the police and his choice of fashion per his mug shot. Since Odell Thurman can probably outrun the cops, spent a couple of years doing time away from the NFL, and he dresses better (if he should get arrested again); all seems to be forgiven. Does that mean we should grab Chris Henry too? I don’t think he’s signed yet. I guess the only line drawn in professional sports is whether you kill someone, bet/sponsor dog-fighting (aka Vick) and gamble on games (aka Pete Rose). Of course the juries out on Vick on whether he will be able to resurrect his NFL career. I wonder how the prison team is doing? Okay, I digress. Now that I got that off my chest, I’ll bite assuming Thurman’s cleaned up his act.

Gotta go with Geno and Richyett on this one. No way, Too much baggage. He had all the incentive and motivation to want to prove something and he blew that too. Not someone I want on the Browns.

There's no harm in talking to him. Bring him in and find out exactly what "Didn't meet expectations" really means. If it means he is out of shape and can't play, then fine, forget it, but if the Bengals cut him to save face from a PR stand point then you know what, it's their loss.

He was CUT by the Bengals for not being up to expectations, which means he is out of shape.I just read on espn that he was cut for "family reasons", not being out of shape. In any other way, i say go for him. He'll probably end up getting another shot in the AFC North bc he'll want to show up Marvin.
