From the time Jacque Jones was let go by the Tigers, the Marlins were a strong front-runners to secure the services of the veteran outfielder.
On Monday, the team made official what was reported for days. Jones has come to terms on a Minor League contract with the Marlins.
A left-handed hitter, Jones has reported to Jupiter, Fla., where he will get some game experience before he joins the Marlins.
Jones was designated for assignment by the Tigers on May 5. He was released, becoming a free agent on May 13.
With Detroit this year, he appeared in 24 games.
When he joins the Marlins, Jones likely will platoon in center field with Cody Ross.
A career .278 hitter, Jones is a candidate to lead off. He also can play all three outfield spots.
The addition of Jones also frees up Alfredo Amezaga to back up in the infield.
The versatile Amezaga has been sharing time in center field, as well as platooning with Ross, at the leadoff spot.
The signing of Jones adds another experienced bat to a youthful squad.
In first place in the National League East, the Marlins have had some injury concerns. Left fielder Josh Willingham is on the disabled list with a strained lower back. Veteran Luis Gonzalez has been filling in for Willingham.
Jones now also becomes an alternative to play left field.
