The Penguins didn't break up their core. They lost a great two-way player in Hossa and some roleplayers, sure, but they preserved the core of the team. In the off-season they were able to sign Malkin, Fleury and Orpik to long-term contracts... they'll still have to look to sign Staal to a long-term deal as well. The Penguins are still strong down the middle of the roster with Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and (hopefully soon) Staal all under contract through the 2013 season.
Time will tell on whether or not the players the Penguins did lose to free agency are interchangeable with any other professional hockey player (meaning their deep-run in the postseason simply inflated their value on the market), or if they really were integral parts.
If Fleury can play up to his ability with any consistency next year, the Penguins have a chance. I'm also inclined to believe that any player put on a line with Crosby or Malkin will see a boost in their performance. It won't be a walk in the park but the Penguins will remain competitive.
