Name this pitcher.

Class-A Lakeland has a young pitcher that has tossed a no-hitter going into the 8th inning in two separate outings this season.  The 1st was on April 26, retiring the first 21 batters.  The most recent was May 18th.

In his last 5 starts, his record is 3-1, with a 3.15 ERA

In his 1st 7 starts, his ERA was 7.64.

He was a 7th round pick in the 2006 draft.

Jonah Nickerson it is.  Keep this name on a sticky note.  He and Rick Porcello may be part of a solid rotation for the Tigers in, say, 2 or 3 years.  Maybe sooner.  Let the talent develop naturally, don't rush it.

One interesting thing to watch on both of them is once they advance to Double-A.  If they can successfully make the leap from Double to Triple A, they have a shot at the parent club.  Quite a difference in day-to-day talent level between AA and AAA ball.

IMO Louis Marte is ahead of Nickerson right now as the pitcher to join Rick Porcello as evodenced by his call up to AA Erie. However all this kids will get a shot in Erie as soon as next season if not sooner. SP at Erie this season has not been a strong suit. Lots of high era's and high whips on that staff. Marte in his second start struggled ( 4 er and 6 BB ) against the same team he beat in his first start. Although he has walked 3 in his first. In my opinion this is still a learning process. The hitters get more selective as you progress and many of the pitches being swung at for strikes in A ball get taken for balls in AA. I would expect to see Porcello at AA some time this season also .

Are you sure that Erie isn't supllying the Tigers Pitching already? Verlander finally pitches a good game and the pen has given up 7 runs so far. The pitching is as advertised, DISCUSTINGLY BAD!!!!
