losing 7 out of 8 is not fun...but we all new this was going to be tough stretch...and if there is a brightside:

• we are still somehow in first
• for the most part it was a result of lousy hitting (that will come back)...as our starting pitching remained consistently average
• this happened against 3 playoff teams (if it ended today)
• also happened just before the mid season point---kind of a hump day thing going on

it has become painfully obvious that this team relies a lot on Utley as hitting barometer...and that is not a bad thing as this slump should not last much longer

however this latest stretch is awfully similar to the how we played against the Rockies last year...

the team has had a brutal stretch here and is just spent...hopefully a day off the field, a couple of slightly .500 teams will get us a 4 of 6 stretch...keep us a game or two up...and get the machine cranking again

I think the 2 biggest things that can from this are...a strong message to the team and management that we are not of elite status yet...so that will bring the team back down to earth and get a little more of a sense of urgency going at the top

secondly...I am getting a feeling that as long as we are in a position to take the division the last 2-3 weeks of the year that it imperative that we are hitting well going into the playoffs. Carrying that momentum through the pennant race into the games that really count is what we need to build on what we accomplished last year...cuz this team is very STREAKY at the plate

i like your posts man. i think this time your under estimating a major potential "team esteem" problem.

I'm about to push the panic button. never thought we'd completely run away with the division, always knew Mets, Braves and Marlins would make pushes and bring it close. We don't have a dominating team to run away by mid season and just coast.

your right it's not hitting. our bats are cold right now, but it's pitching. we all know it, at least we should. This team as it is right now can make the playoffs, but we need 1-2 arms to honestly compete for a World Series. past 3 champions have had some serious pitching. we currently have nothing more then an average starting pitching rotation. 3.89 team ERA, and lets be honest Lidge, Romero and Durbin are the only 3 helping the overall stats look pretty. 3 starters with ERA's over 5.

so with out some moves, maybe the sky is falling.

I think you're right bro.  Our starting rotation has the most innings per game average.  We need some run support and that will come.  I think these next two series should help us out.  I think our guys put too much pressure on themselves for that home series with LA.  We are so desperate to break out of our slump, and you know they wanted to do it at home.  A day off and little road trip will hopefully do us some good.

We should definitely go for one more starter before the deadline.

pope

you might be on to something there...I mean having 2 maybe 3 MVPs (all relatively young) in one locker room, none of which is a real super emotional guy...is leaving everyone kind of leaning on each other too much---waiting for the next guy to do it---no true leader is arising and its leading to some mid season sputtering

maybe the fact, utley is struggling and Phils are struggling this much too...shows that he really is the leader and he doesn't realize yet or is reluctant to take the title

they certainly lack a little identity as the face of the team seems to change by the game which when winning is a good thing...but not when you are losing like this...
someone needs to step up and soon
