I'll own whatever gun I want regardless of what the law says because it is my moral right as a human being to bear arms.  The main purpose of owning guns is not to defend yourself from petty crime, but to defend your rights from your own government!  An armed population is a check against tyranny.

You hit it right on the nose here.  I couldn't agree more.

I do take some complaint with the folks on here that just want to blame everything on liberals.  Aren't liberals, by virtue of definition of the word, more inclined to allow more freedoms to the general populace?  I haven't followed this thing too much obviously.

If liberals can be stereotyped into being gun-haters, I would like to point out the late Dr. Hunter S. Thompson-- probably the most famous liberal/hippie of all time, and he was always armed to the teeth and one of the biggest gun fanatics alive.  Crap, for his funeral service, he had his remains fired out of a cannon at the top of a hundred foot tower (the guy was also nuttier than a fruitcake, but his books and articles from Sports Illustrated were hillarious, and the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was one of the best in its genre)!

Kinda off topic, sorry....

Aren't liberals, by virtue of definition of the word, more inclined to allow more freedoms to the general populace?

It depends on what issue you are talking about.  Liberals are more likely to support more freedom concerning social issues and conservatives are more likely to support freedom concerning economic issues.  Liberals will limit economic freedom by instituting government programs like welfare, social security, medicare, etc. because they believe these programs are necessary for society, whereas conservatives will limit social freedom by opposing abortion, gay marriage, etc because they believe these limitations in freedom are necessary for a society to function.

This is why I'm a libertarian, where freedom is applied to both social and economic issues.

Well put, I tried to come up with a logical response, but couldnt, I would have my weapon in hand as the vehicle approached is the bottom line, its called a permit to carry and its within my reach at all times as needed. In most cases just a quick flash that the weapon is in hand is enough.

OK, the insults are flying thick and fast and this should never have gone that way. We both have shown how putting spin on the same statistics can be used to make whatever point we want.
Bottom line, this discussion is pointless. No one will convince me and I wont convince you. Lets agree to disagree and leave it at that.

ozpackerfan......The main point is not that "no one will convince me and I won't convince you" but rather that there are subjects of such vast importance, ie to the individual and to society, that they should be discussed - demand discussion............nor "this discussion is pointless" because we can learn from other's posts - not only to support our thoughts as to if we still want to maintain them but also to mull over the possibility that we want to change our thoughts even as to just a portion of what someone has brought to the discussion table.

We should not be stagnant in this ever changing world - we should never stop questioning our ideas nor stop adding to and subtracting from.  Maturity is a constant search because without the searching our maturity level stops at the point we stopped searching.

It is so obvious we do not yet have solutions for the important problems otherwise we would be further along in our depth of civility than we are.  We went to the moon well over 30 years ago and yet are experiencing the same old - same old, ie wars, over-population, etc.

Specifically relating to guns:  absolutely everthing, every entity on this planet has its pro and con - wet/dry, cold/hot, drought/flood and guns are no exception.....they deter aggressive behavior as well as can be that which allows the aggressive to feel strengthened to commit aggressive behavior.

"OK, here's a scenario. You are driving along the freeway and accidently cut someone off. The guy you cut off drives up along side you winds down the window and starts shooting up your car including your wife in the passenger side and your kid on the back seat. I would like to know how exactly your gun is going to help you defend your family in this case? It is all over in less than a second. You don't have time to get your gun and yet your family is dead along side you. Or are you driving along with your gun on your lap just in case this situation arises."

None of you gun lovers have even acknowledged this. Is the question too hard? How about you give me a scenario where your gun WILL help you....

Oz, yes your scenario could happen, now which gun law on the books or new gun law will prevent this???  I know what will, but its going to take a generation to take hold.  In my perfect world using your scenario, the person using the gun will never be allowed back in free society again, better yet they would be executed within a few years of conviction, after a maximum of 2 appeals.
