TampaVulture, I agree with you that the Red Sox do have a lot of fans who are "stuck up and arrogant"; but these are the same fans who are drunk and jumped on the bandwagon a few years ago. They are not part of "Red Sox Nation" as we like to say...they are not part of any nation, except "Drunk and Disorderly Nation". We have 'em, and believe me, we don't acknowledge them as part of the charm of our team's history.
No, we do not have 26 championships...like the Yankees do. I have never discussed our team as in the same category as the Yankee franchise or the Celtics or the Canadians for that matter. But, what we do have is a history of solid, competitive teams that unfortunately (until '04) always found a way to lose in the end.
And what we have now is a brilliant young GM, an excellent communicator in Francona, an outstanding farm system (like you guys do), and a pretty solid fan base that pays big, stupid money to go to games in the "just under 40,000" fan ballpark known as Fenway.
I like the way the Rays have held onto their young stars and have built a foundation of success for years to come...congratulations, and good luck the rest of the way! I thought before the year they were in for a .500 season, with the real success only a year or so away...I was wrong. The Rays are looking at a chance to bid for a playoff berth this year, if their pitching holds up...as for the Yanks, that pitching staff is looking really rugged right now. They, too, have the bats; but more importantly, if they are still in contention by the end of next month, they have the $$ to make a move...
