Nice idea, but not happening....Mackowiak is a butcher with the glove, but he can make errors at a few different positions....Andy Phillips can play, but no one can play 1 day a week and play well....He hit .290 last year in the AL East...his defense is twice what Edwin Encarnacion's is, and he can also play 2b and OF...he isn't the right type for Dusty to play much, if you know what I mean...as long as Patterson is on this roster he will be a liability, and a probability to find playing time for Baker...Hopper is a leadoff hitter, and that messes with Corey/'s chances, so Hop's toast if possible in Dusty's mind, IMO.
You see, Dusty can't help it, he's a losaholic...he has to have bums in the lineup, can never get enough bad players, and won't be happy until everyone in the lineup are bums, or at least get as bad as they can be.
I'm starting to wonder if the reason Dunn, Votto, Keppinger and Bruce have hit so often out of logical lineup position so much of the time, while Griffey, Phillips, Patterson, Encarnacion and Hairston have gotten so much better lineup advantage / protection (regardless of their stats at the time) may have to do more with their color than their stats...how else can you explain it ? I don't care if you lead the pitcher off and can win, but this is BS at the A-S break to still be trying to figure out how to score runs....with a .240 #3 hitter, the leadoff hitter hitting #4, and every slow slugger or .200 hitter with speed you can find in the leadoff spot....Hairston has been the short sample size exception......since when is the #7 spot reserved for your power hitter ? Dunn & Votto have hit there all year...
remember...in Dusty's words- "walks just clog up the bases"....
