Kelvin Sampson is done (as am I for the day)

Posted on: February 22, 2008 7:56 pm

Kelvin Sampson resigned to avoid termination.

I'm glad he did it before dinner.

Because I'm hungry.

So I'm going to eat and I'll check back in later.

Kelvin Sampson is done (as am I for the day)

I think it was a win win for Sampson and Indiana  and hopefully for the players left to pick up and play.

The  allegations were enough that Indiana did not want  him to coach.  However, the allegations probably  needed to result in sanctions for Coach Sampson to be terminated.  If IU was going  to need to wait the ruling to actually fire him as coach and avoid a lawsuit from Coach Sampson they were faced with this being constant recurring news.

Now the next "story" will bump this item and Sampson has a healthy chunk of money to bide his time till his next coaching position which I am sure we will see within two years. So many NCAA investigations turn out NOT to be as substantive as it first sounds like when reported.

And NCAA can be told IU was being pro-active.

Sampson is in need of psychological help.It is very obvious that he has an addictive personality diorder which is out of control. Two great jobs, and like many a compulsive gambler,he throws then away. We should not be looking to place blame, but rather to see that he gets the treatmnet required to get his life back into order

Gary Parrish, this Kelvin Sampson story is a story that calls for a little more geneosity of spirit than you have showed.  Trying to provide the first press release at a hanging on Boston Common, say, is at best a study in self-promotion and at worst terrible sensibility about the event as tragedy.  The headline about wanting to go home for dinner I thought terribly distasteful and mocking.  A lot of people are hurting at this situation, especially the IU team. I do not expect you to sugar-coat the story--facts are facts.  But implicit or explicit gloating over it and mockery about your happiness at not having to miss supper is, how to say it, tasteless in the max.   On many issues, if I may add to this criticism, you seem to me to show a cockiness which, if reduced, would make your reporting skills, excellent as they are in other ways, much enhanced for readers like me.  I am a Hoosier born and bred and do not condone Mr. Sampson's actions.  But, really now, this is no time to be gloating over an early supper.

Cordially,

James Yerkes, Ph.D.
