I just went to the Thrashers team board, to get their thoughts, and there is not one post about the Hossa trade. The latest post is about a Ruutu hit on Kovalchuck, and that was started by a Flyers fan. If that not enough proof to move the NHL out of the south, I don't know what is. Oh, wait, attendance. I guess that's two reasons.

Georgia is just not a good state for hockey.  However, when I lived in Macon, Ga I enjoyed going to watch the Macon Woopie play hockey.

Two of the past few Stanley Cup Champions have come from the south, why shouldnt they have hockey...just because they're having one bad year? I'm also a Lightning fan since I live in Tampa as well as a Penguins fan and the Lightning come close to selling out every game.

I meant no disrespect to hockey fans in the south. I just found it odd that Atlanta had the best player available on the trade market, he was traded, and there was no response by Thrasher fans. At least the Brad Richards trade got a thread and a couple of responses. That is progress. BTW, TB got a good goalie in that trade.

Atlanta in general does not have great support for their sports teams. I went down for a Steelers game there and it seemed like it was about half Steelers fans and alot of empty seats! The Braves also have had mediocre support even though they have had some great seasons. I think hockey is a distant third in a town that does not have great support to start with.

To be fair to Atlanta,  just because there aren't many fans on sportsline doesn't mean the club doesn't have a lot of hockey fans.  At one point the Hossa trade thread on the Thrashers Official forum had more posts in it than the equivalent thread on the Penguins Official forum.

It is interesting to hear this topic actually being debated again.  I remember when all of the teams from up north moving down south, fans were confused, and hockey traditionalists might still be confused with the matter.

However, the bottom line is that professional hockey is a business, not a very lucrative business, but the francises that exist are in the best places for them to be reasonably sucessful.  Hockey is just not a big sport in the states, and where ever a team can make money they will be there, whether they have die hard fans or not.

I actually lived in Atlanta for four years and just recently moved back to the Burgh. They do have a decent fan base for hockey. In defense of Atlanta, the city is a melting pot of sorts. Most transplants like myself continue to be loyal to their hometown favorites, especially us Pittsburghers. But the few true Atlanta natives I knew were ecstatic to get a hockey team back  after losing the Flames several years ago.

They have less then 10 threads on their message board.  I went on the Florida Panther message board.  One guy posted all the threads and no one responded to them.
