Mike,

I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion that "Psycho-T" is a media darling creation, but the race argument didn't need to be included to make your point.  I remember a time when Air Jordan was the face of basketball for the entire world at every level of competition; an unbelievably gifted/talented black man who no one would dare claim wasn't tough as well.

As for Hansbrough, he has one of the ugliest games I have ever seen for someone who garners so much adoration and respect.  Yes, he never takes a play off and works hard in the weight room, which are attributes to admire.  But take away all of the unbelievable talent that surrounds him, and he's just another average "banger" mopping up.  His low post game is all muscle, no technique.

Is the racial divide in this country still so wide that a black player (Henderson) pummeling a white player is enough to elevate a marginal talent to icon status?!?  From what I've read, heard, and seen, it must be.

p.s. - The Raftery "listen" comment is frightening.  Senility, anyone?!?

Freeman has once again lost me. I can agree that Hansbrough is overhyped but him being called the 'face of college basketball' has nothing to do with race. Did you not watch any ball last season when Noah, Durant and Oden were being overhyped to everyone across the country? Was race a part of it then?

Short the claims of racial injustice, this was a good article. And that is saying a lot for Mr. Freeman.

yo mac, where was the unbelievable talent around him his first year? The next two best guys on the team were a couple of kids that couldn't get on the court the year before when UNC won the national title. And he averaged about 19 a game. His 'ugly game' is exactly how a post player should play, attack people and get them in foul trouble. Btw, he's considered extremely skilled by almost every coach in America. An average banger, are you kidding me?

Freeman,

in the future when you write an article because your bored, at least let the guy in the cube next to you read it. Anyone that knows anything about college b-ball would know your "player of the year comment" was the dumbest factually incorrect opinion ever stated.

What is up with all the "smoking crack" references??  As a race card player, he should know white folk don't smoke crack.

Yo, LG -- I saw two average "big men" on my Terps outplay Hansbrough in January, thus helping to solidify my opinion.  Btw, did you personally poll "almost every coach in America" to come up with that info regarding his skill?"

The Heels are a great team, but you will never convince me that Hansbrough deserves the excessively glowing accolades he receives.  We'll see who's right if he's lucky enough to make it to the next level.  Right now, I don't see him possessing an NBA-caliber game.

White players that excel in sports that are dominated by black players(baketball, football) are always going to get more attention because its something out of the ordinary. We've seen it before with J.J. Reddick, Adam Morrisson, and Keith Van Horn. It's magnified times a million because he plays at one of the most prestigious schools in college basketball and in the almighty ACC. Freeman is not taking shots at Hansborough, he is criticizing the mindset of the media, of which he is a member. Good white basketball players, nowdays, are always overhyped to a certain extent because its something different and people want to believe in them. Everything Mike said is true and you don't have to like it, but if you sit down and think about what he is saying, you will realize the truth as well. Doesn't mean you have to like it, but its no reason to take shots at him for a very accurate portrayl of the truth.

You said in the beginning of your article that "you thought you had smoked crack again?"

...again? Now I understand...

What a great article to write (sarcasm).  Coming off of the heels of a very promising premed student being murdered in cold blood and left in the street by a black thug wannabe.   Want to know why people are racist?  It's because of retarded thugs who murder anyone for a few dollars and the people that write articles like this trash I just read.  As soon as he said anything about color, it became an artilcle about race and stopped being about ability or drive.  CBS should fire this monkey but they won't b/c deep down they are all spineless executive types that have no values for what is right.  My view may be seen as racist, but I don't care.  Give everybody a chance and "judge them not on the color of their skin, but by the content of their character"  I think a famous man once said something like that.

This has got to be the stupidest article I have ever read.  Do you not remember Greg Oden, Kevin Durant from last year.  Talk about media hype.  So your arguement is pointless.

Why bring race into this?  Oh, because it is the only thing you can find negative, I see.  If your initial argument doesn't work, you throw race into the equation.

Since you referened smoking crack twice in your article, maybe you just need to keep smoking it, because your skills as a writer are equal to what a crack smoking journalist woud put out.

Loser, the only word that I have for you.  Loser.

Also, if Tyler is a media darling, why keep bringing it up.  All you are doing is making it worse and making yourself look less unique as a sports writer.  Maybe you should go write articles for Rev. Jesse Jackson.  At least your race argument would hold water with him.

I am a UNC fan and I watched Micheal Jordan play while at UNC.  He was the prevIously  "most determined player I ever saw at UNC".. Tyler is almost inhuman in his motor as they say in football.  He is not as unbelievably talented as Jordan was  (really who ever was).  To say Tyler doesn't deserve the attention he is given for being such a warrior because he is white is foolish!  I saw when Tyler was pretty much shut down by Hibbert last year.  It is true (in my opinion) that Tyler hustles his way to where hes gotten.  It's not racist it's a fact.  There are some black guys who don't have a 40 inch vertical too. and have short arms.  Tyler is relatively fast for a big man and hes well coordinated and and can shoot better than he is given credit for.  But his main attribute is his hustle and fierce determination.  This isn't racist, this is fact.  This writer deserves to be fired.  I'd say fire him if he was white too.  RACE DOES NOT NEED TO BE BROUGHT UP IN THIS FASHION, IT'S DISGRACEFUL..  Tyler is getting attention because his team has won 29 games and he is averaging 23 points a game and 10.5 rebounds.

I very much agree. Perhaps it is not out and out racism, but it does raise lots of racial questions about college basketball media, UNC, & Roy Williams. Roy never campaigned for Paul Peirce or Drew Gooded like this. Tyler can't help but look like he's playing hard because he's so freakin' uncoordinated. If the officials weren't in love with the dude, his offensive output would be cut in half because he travels about 50% of the time he touches the ball near the basket.

Beasley is such a superior player. It makes me sad that this is happening.

And when Jordan was the face of basketball, he had no peer. Can you say the same for Hansbrough?   The only thing close to Jordan may be Tiger, Navratilova, Graf, or maybe Federer. Jordan’s not usable in this argument.
Maybe Mike didn’t need to bring it up, but unfortunately what he said is still true. If Tyler were black, he’d just be Roy Hibbert, or (insert any kid getting the best out of their ability).

so mac, based on one night your going to form your opinion on a player? Not the best idea. As to his skill, if you ever watched UNC games, which I'm assuming you don't based on your erroneous opinions, you would always here people commenting on his skill level, including coaches after the game in interviews or newsrooms. And there's the small matter of him being a pretty good shooter and ball handler for a big guy. There's been a number of times I've seen him take guys with his face up game and they could do nothing about it.
