why does nd play zone?!!!!! their zone is terrible. they make average shooting teams look great from behind the arc. any guard who is good enough to play college basketball can hit that shot. all year long nd has been burned from behind the arc. opponents are left so wide open against the zone they've got all night to line the shot up. i've watched point guards penetrate the zone and kick out for the open shot against nd on a nightly basis. they play zone too much and it ends up giving the other team momentum and confidence to stage comebacks or jump way out to a big lead like louisville.

it hurt them tonight. But  the Irish looked like they were just going through the motions. they came out the 2nd half and hit some shots to get a nice lead then fell apart. they have to get a killer instinct. Harangody forced too many shots and the team just looked out of sync. play like this in the NCAA Tournament and they are one and done.

Notre Dame played way too much zone D tonight.  That allowed McNeal to light it up esp in the second half.  I thought at least putting a chaser on McNeal would have had to be better then their soft zone.

The Irish looked out of sink most of the night.  Harangody was forcing when it wasn't there and seemed to pass when he should have made a move.  McAlarney was too little too late.  Hillesland had a great game of rebounding and picking up a few easy baskets.

Another performance like this will result in another one and done in the big dance.

I completely agree on the zone thing. You'd see one guard drive to the hoop and 5 guys collapse around him. Marquette could pick and choose who they wanted to dish it to for the open 3. Granted they still shot like 70% in the second half, but it's a lot easier when you're wide open for the shots. Brey obviously didn't want to play man because he thought we were either not athletic enough to pull it off, or he wanted to keep Gody from manning up and getting fouls called on him. That was an incredibly frustrating game to watch, and I hope that it'll be a wakeup call to both the coaching staff and the players

ND has to play zone against teams like Marquette because they don't have the quickness/athleticism to keep up with those guards. That being said, they need to work on not collapsing so much and giving up the wide open three.

The simple fact is that Marquette is a terrible matchup for ND this year. Even the win in the South Bend, I thought the Irish played out of their minds and still only won by 3.

Finally, I think its a bit ridiculous to say that a game like last night will result in a one and done in the tourney. I actually thought ND played reasonably well last night and just got beat by a really good team that was having a really hot shooting night. In the first round, it is very doubtful they will see a team with the combo of athleticism and shooting that Marquette has.

if they are going to give up about 90 pts. when they play zone then they might as well play man to man, couldn't do any worse.

Another problem with the zone defense is u can't get a body on everybody for a block out and rebounding position which allows open spaces for the other team to slide into for second chance baskets. Couple that with long bounces off the rim from 3pt misses and that gives too many extra possessions. When u are behind or are clinging to a lead this can be critical to winning or losing the game.

We are too undersized at all positions to play much man D. Our deficiency shows up when we fail to extend on the wings to get in the face of the shooters camping out there. For us it is all about hustle and frustrating the other teams who probably have more athletic talent than we do but not as much heart. Marquette uses dribble drive as well as anyone this side of Memphis but not many teams we would face have a backcourt that quick to make it work. As much as I wanted to be rolling into the tourney by winning the Big East, we have proven to be a very resilient team right after a loss and I expect us to perform just like we have all season.
