Before we start saying that Pitt's going to the final four, we have to remember that every year we say that Pitt's a final four or Elite 8 team, they find a way to screw it up. They go through the long grind in NYC the week before, playing their hearts out, usually making it to the finals, start looking ahead to that potential Pitt/ UCLA matchup like we usually do (and thank God we don't have to put up with that this year) and then they go into the tournament flat. It's not like a lot of the teams we lose to are that stellar. Remember Pacific? Bradley? Kent State? Wiscon ... oh wait, the NCAA jobbed Pitt that year by giving the lower seed the home court adv.. Point is, Jamie Dixon better make sure these guys are fresh, prepared, and ready to go come 2:50 (12:50 MDT) because we don't want Oral Roberts to make this dubvious list. No looking ahead to Memphis and Texas. Let's get our business done in Denver first.

Very well put Steelers. You are absolutely right. Pitt CANNOT look past any game. Any team can get streaky and get hot from the 3 pt. line at any time. Ive heard from other people and Oral Roberts fans that Oral Roberts is a Dayton-type team and can really drain the 3's if they get into a groove. I think Jamie has a hold on his team this time though. Jamie, the actual team, and the fans all know too well what can happen when we look ahead. We trip over that proverbial invisible log in the forest (ie Bradley, Pacific) every time we worry about the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 matchup. This is a "one game at a time" process, so lets hope Jamie stresses that to the team.

GO PITT!!!!

Thanks the firethatpit and Steelers.  I am hoping and have been preaching this since Fields broke his foot.   I believe then and still believe now that this year is special as I called it magical then.  I wish the stoogies would stop talking about Young's possibilities of going into the draft and all of this other post season BS.  We do not need these distractions.

I can see and feel the team ignoring the idiots (to date at least) about how good they are and who they should beat.  Even Bobby Knight went as far as picking Pitt to the Final Four and even furtheer.  Jamie's job is to get them up for every game especially the lesser teams that want it badly.  Oral Roberts upset Duke a couple of years ago and believe me, they can be the cinderella team and do it again.

Pitt has been playing better defense every game dating back to the Louisviille game. They will have their hands full with Oral Roberts and their perimeter game but as long as they continue the perimeter defense, they will be fine.  Remeber that most of Vaughns and all the other 3's for Louisville, Georgetown and Marquette wer NBA 3s.  They will need to defend the 3s and make free throws as most of the inside shots will be fouled early and lead to free throw.  If they are not shooting free throws better than 60% this game will be tight.  I am excited and cannot wait until thursday.

Lets go Pitt!!!

That's probably Bobby Knight's plan for seeking revenge against Pitt for making him look bad when he implied that they had no chance against Georgetown.   He wants to swell their heads by picking them to win it all causing them to look past a team in the early rounds and get eliminated.  Of course this makes him look like an idiot again.  I didn't say it was a particularly good plan...he has been spending a lot of time hanging around with Dick Vitale,  and that can be awfully dangerous for someone's mental health (and hearing, BABY).

Anyways in all seriousness though,  even though Pitt does look like they have all the pieces (defense, outside shooting, quality big man and inside presence, balance, NBA quality playmaker, etc.) there are still a lot of intangibles between Pitt and even the Sweet 16.

The biggest of which is officiating. Pitt plays a physical defense,  they bump, grind, and wear down their opponents.  That is the entire key to most of their defense.  All it takes is one whistle happy official and suddenly Pitt's chances plummet.  Their defense starts to resemble Tennessee's,  their inside game goes soft, they start to get out rebounded,  and are forced to leave key players on the bench because of foul trouble.  We've all seen it happen several times this year during a couple of the regular season games,  and it has a nasty habit of happening during the tournament to Pitt in the NCAA tourney.   I'm terrified of it happening yet again and wrecking the Panthers chances (especially with their mediocre to poor foul shooting giving the opponent an even bigger advantage in foul filled games.)

You won't find this guy getting ahead of things.  I know that to make it past the Sweet 16 is quite an accomplishment...one to date that has managed to elude the Panthers.  We have not had a run in the NCAA's that would be considered a good one.  However, we have really only had one really poor showing the past 6 seasons in the tourney (losing to 13 seed Bradley in the 2nd round in 2006).  That loss to Pacific in the first round...don't forget that Pitt was the lower seed that year (an 8-9 matchup).

Pitt's NCAA tournament record over the past six years is 9-6.  Not bad considering that when you get to the Dance, everyone is good or they wouldn't be here and everyone is keyed up.  I'll grant you, it would be much nicer to have had a Final 4 run in there somewhere, but all the same, 4 sweet sixteens in 6 years are nothing to sneeze at.

If you finish in the Sweet 16, that means in theory that your team is somewhere between the 9th and 16th best program in the country that year (again, I say in theory).  Pitt really has not been much better than that over those years.  Maybe once or twice they were a top 10 team.  However, I think that in general they have made the most of their talent through those years.  Here's hoping they have a Final Four run in them this year.  Go Pitt!!!!

I agree with u guys, but lets not forget that Pitt is one of the if not the hottest team in the nation now that they have beaten 3 ranked teams in as many days. Not saying that they are going to go all the way but they do have a good shot at the E8 if they keep up the tough D and continue to make shots. The thing they must work on the most right now is foul shots. They are not going to do anything in the tourney if they are unable to make foul shots the way they did against G'Town. 50% at the line will not cut it anymore. I have already made one bracket and took Pitt to the Final 4 Hope they pull it off though. Let Go Pitt!!!

On the surface it looks like you're right, but we didn't underachieve as much as you think.  1) UCLA beat us last year, and we know how that turned out...
2) Bradley didn't look like such a good team, but they did beat Kansas the round before...
3) We were the 9 seed when we lost to Pacific.  We weren't supposed to win the first round that year...
4) When we got hosed, we BEAT Wisconsin, then lost to Oklahoma State.  They were the 2 seed and a Final 4 team.
5) People didn't take Marquette seriously in 2003 because of their conference.  They were the three seed though.
6) The Kent State thing wasn't so good, but then again it was our first NCAA tourney in how long?

All things considered, I think Pitt only "underachieved" one, maybe two, of the last 6 years.  If we get to Memphis and lose, that's just another year of doing about how we should.  I'm waiting for the year when we win two or three big tournament games instead of one.
