I've seen this has basically turned into a who's better, GS or The Lakers, argument on the threads and while I'll concede that I think the Lakers are the best team in the west, therefore better than GS, I'd like to talk about the officiating.
I'm a huge fan of all sports in general and living in the bay area really allows for me to be. With two NFL teams, two MLB teams, The Warriors, The Sharks, The Sabercats and I think an MLS team somewhere around, I've got a lot of opportunity to watch sports. All that being said, I'm a huge baseball and football fan and I have been trying to get more into basketball but the officiating of the NBA is really making it difficult.
I've watched just about every Warriors game this year and I can easily, off the top of my head, think of a handful of calls that changed the momentum of a game and seemingly the outcome. To me it has really gotten to the point where it is just out of hand. With all of the bad calls and the bad non calls it rarely seems to me that the refs make the right call. Then if someone argues the wrong call, they get a technical and the other team gets a point. I feel that the refs in the NBA assume fouls and don't always see them. If someone drives the paint, throws up a layup and then falls to the ground, it's assumed they were fouled. I feel like this happens so much that the players have gotten used to it and try to make plays by getting fouled. To me when Derek Fisher pulled down Monta Ellis last night, it would have been a great no call. That's why you didn't get a call from the ref who was standing right next Stephen Jackson and had the best view of the entire play. Both guys, just like Kobe and Baron, were pushing and pulling at each other and because of that, they both fell. I just can't believe that call was made and that ref took away any chance the Warriors had at tying or winning the game. Let the players play. No one pays for tickets or watches on TV to see the officials make calls. In the very close Western Conference, every win matters and to take away a teams chance of winning a game, really should be embarrassing for that referee and the people who run the league. I'd really like to watch more games and become more of a fan of the NBA, but games like last night make it a lot more difficult.
Lastly, before I get the "you're whining", response and the human element response I'd like to say something about it first. I don't feel like I'm whining, I don't think the Warriors lost the game because of that call, however, I do feel they lost an opportunity to win the game because of it. I thought the Warriors lost because Nellie has no confidence in his bench and keeps Baron, Jackson and Ellis in until they are throwing up half-assed threes because they are out of energy. Secondly, I'm a huge baseball fan and I realize there is a human element and I'm not asking the refs to get 100%, I'm just asking that they get the majority of the calls right.

the refs should never make a call that completely changers the potential outcome of a game..at worst, he shoudl have called both for a foul and had the Warriors inbound the ball again..I want to play the Lakers next and prove they are the most over-hyped team. No Bynum, and maybe no Gasol, we beat the Lakers in the playoffs...

From someone who has been a ref...basketball is the most difficult game to ref. The game is so fast paced that it is impossible to make every call. They dont use replay to challenge a call. Try it first then back to me. The refs should get better but that is extremely difficult more than what the untrained eye could see.

Great post. I used to be a multiple season tix holder but the refs have ruined the game for me. JBANK knows what he's talking about so I'll take his word that it's the hardest, but that doesn't change it for me. It's the baffling and horrendous bad calls that get me. Bad calls always happen but in the NBA it seems horrendous calls happen a lot. And traveling? Holy cow, basically every other play? And the favoritism to the superstars is jaw-droppingly pathetic. Not only are they better than anyone else but they get to cheat? It's sad as it is a good sport.

Thats the thing mtsm1...Most NBA players travel about 80% of the time they touch the ball. Imagine how slow the game would be if the refs ACTUALLY called every walk or illegal dribble. I understand where most are coming from with the officials but many complain about no calls, those are the ones that can be missed. You also have to take in consideration the constant pressure put on the officials by the coach. A good coach could really work a ref good and influence calls. Some refs cave in to that pressure and begin to anticipate calls or miss them all together. It really is tough guys, but I'll make no excuses for the NBA refs. They, just like the players are professionals and should put in more time to perfect their craft. Just an inside perspective from a zebra ;-)

They showed some highlights of past (black and white TV days) NCAA tourny games and watching the players do what they had to to avoid traveling during breaks was humorous at points. You're probably right on that traveling thing as one extra step on a breakaway never hurt anyone. I am biased as a once rabid (now not as much but still very interested) Wolves fan, I saw Shaq repeatedly plow over Rasho Nesterovich then take about 4 steps as he walks all over his body on his way to a dunk and then see Rasho get called for a foul half the time. Rasho is not in the same hemisphere as Shaq but Shaq getting the extra benefit of calls rubs me the wrong way in a big way. I also saw Wally Szerbiak get called for a totally cheap foul neat the end of a very close crunch playoff game game where Scerbiak not only didn't touch Kobe but went out of his way to avoid contact. Those are just a couple huge homer things I'll never be able to forget. The coaches can work a ref but refs should be above that (easy for me to say). You make good points too in that it's such a fine line between letting them play and calling it tight. It has to be impossible to keep any consistancy. It'll be hard to change my view on NBA refs but JBANK, you opened my eyes to another side of it. I know your knowledge of basketball is very high.

Great Post. The 2 other big problems with NBA officiating, and one you do not see in MLB, NFL, or the NHL, is the "Make-Up Call." I hate it when these guys feel that the best way to deal with a bad call, or no call, is to make another bad decision. This is particularly a problem with fouls that suddenly add up on guys who did not do anything wrong. Plus these calls are so obvious you can see them coming from a mile away. The other thing that bugs me to no end, is the calling of a foul on a guy that suddenly is given to some 8 minute-a-night guy as his 1st as opposed to giving the star player his 3rd or 4th early, when he deserves it, because said scrub stuck his hand up right after the whistle blew. Finally, I think all hoops fans now hold some scepticism over the impartiality of referees after the betting scandel from earlier this year, you just never know.
