Everyone has there doubts about the Mets but how maine is looking he could win 19 games santana could win 22 perez about 15 pedro 13-15.thats 69 wins from the starting 4 .so they could win 100 i dont see them finishing 3rd that s crazy

The Mets will not finish 3rd in their division....if they dont finish 1st, then maybe a WC...they will finish either 1st, which I hope or a close 2nd....if not 1st, then a WC...

Whats with all the crack references around sportsline? First in the Hansborough article now here. Oh well, I agree, I have no clue what this guy's smoking, but it must be good stuff. With Johan and John Maine in this rotation there's no way we'll finish 3rd. Atlanta has a lineup, but they have NO PITCHING WHATSOEVER. An don't gimme that Glavine crap. Did he watch last season at all? And don't get me started on the Phillies. Do they really expect Lidge to keep the ball and his sanity in the park in that cracker jack box? My mother could hit it out of there. I'm not saying the Mets don't have their weaknesses, but those weaknesses aren't as glaring as the rest of the east.

As much of a Phillies fan as i am, you guys are completely right about most of what you're saying.  the Mets obviously aren't getting the respect they deserve here and it's a joke.  All i can say is there is no reason whatsoever to take the mets lightly and not expect them to at least put the phillies to a huge test for the division and i wouldnt be surprised to see either team front run a bit for most of the season.  I hope you guys also respect the phillies enough, which i'm sure you do, and while i have my worries about lidge, i have to have faith he will come back and gain some mental toughness.  i can't wait for the message boards to fill up every time a player on each team goes down or after the phillies get off to there perennial slow start.

Hey luckynumber, did YOU watch anything last season? Glav was great for you stinkin' Mets until his last three starts because your stupid manager used him as a #1 for the whole year instead of the #3 that he is now! I agree with you about the Phils. They don't have any pitching past their #1 and #2, but honestly, if Pedro goes down, then neither do you. Maine's still not completely proven, and he has shown in years past (obviously not last year) that he can be streaky. Also, you have an OLD lineup...Delgado's got a bum hip, Alou is older than God himself, and who's in RF? Oh yeah, that's right, a castoff from the Nationals. Wow. Great upgrade there. Also, you're going to have Castillo get hurt at least once this season, so who's going to bat leadoff? And furthermore, who do you have offensively for catcher? Your weaknesses are glaring. Do I think that you'll finish third? No. But I don't think that your team is nearly as strong as you think, and I don't think that you'll end up winning the division. But keep talking like you are so that when the Braves win it, then we can laugh at you when we're in the postseason yet again and you're sitting at home wondering what happend yet again.

I don't usually side with Mets fans but I'm feeling some NY hated from this guy.  Yanks and Mets miss playoffs??  Pass whatever hes smoking over this way baby I need to be apart of this crazy world like Kenny on South Park last night.  There is No way I buy the Phils being better than the Mets I just really don't and I don't see how anyone but Philly fans can disagree.  Now on to my team I kinda love that so many people (except SI) are picking against the Yankees and what is the reasons here?  Please tell me the last time they missed the playoffs? Oh 1993? OK.  They have so many young arms and yes I am not saying there aren't questions but who doesn't have as many or more? Not Boston!  Please break down how Beckett is better than Wang (leave out post season were talking making the playoffs)  Pettitte v Dice K I give it to Pettitte Wake(w/ no douggie) v. Mussina I'll take Wake but not by much (both will have about 10 + wins with era in the high 4.  Then you can argue this all day and all night until the careers are really going but we both have unproven young starters.  The lineups forget it Yanks are better top to bottom.  Bullpen I'd say even.  Please stop the NY hating I mean pick against em every year from now on like all the writers started doing with the Braves around '01 and eventually you will be right....just not yet thanks for commin

"Atlanta has a lineup, but they have NO PITCHING WHATSOEVER"

are you kidding me? I would put smoltz and hudson up against santana and maine or pedro any day of the week. if you are going to make an arguement against atlanta it should be whether or not chipper will stay healthy or if soriano works out as the closer they expect him to be.

So, just because your team misses the play-offs that means the writer is on drugs? Face it, the Braves, Mets, and Phillies could finish in any order this year. The Mets finishing 3rd isn't that far-fetched. It's not what I predict, but it's certaintly possible.

Tim Hudson is excellent, but you can't count on 2 40+ year olds(smoltz and glavine) and an injury prone hampton to complete your rotation.  And imagine, as you point out, if chipper doesnt stay healthy.  The Braves will definitely not be last in their division (the Marlins have that on lock) but they could be fighting with the mighty Nats for 2nd to last.

I admit I was pretty surprised about seeing the Mets picked 3rd, but at the same time, no one's going to call their offense "Murderer's Row".  They have great pitching, there's no denying that.  But I will go one step further, if Santana gets injured (I'm not talking a minor day-to-day injury), the Mets will finish a distant 3rd.  But I don't think that will happen (obviously you can't predict when injuries will occur), so I think they will win the division (or get the Wild Card), but that's just my opinion.

The one thing I did see for the first time this year was the White Sox getting picked as the A.L. surprise team this year (ironic because I just posted something about this on another article's thread).  I wouldn't knock him on this one (or the Reds pick as the N.L. surprise team), because it is very hard to be accurate when picking a surprise team coming out of nowhere.  Again, just my opinion, if pre-season opinions and predictions really mean anything anyway.

Whoa Whoa Whoa Great?? Glavine got shelled all of last season! Look at his stats in the first inning! Glavine's too old, doesn't have control anymore, and he is supposed to be this savvy vet when in the last game of the season right after Maine threw a gem of a game Glavine completely CHOKED and the game was over before the first inning! Yeah, I watched plenty of that last season. And the Braves?? Wow, you must be doing stand up comedy. The braves have absolutely no bullpen and you're relying on a guy who hasn't pitched in three years (Mike Stanton), that same "savvy vet" that can't throw anymore (Tom Glavine) and a pitcher who is just now starting to show his age (Smoltz) to carry the team. And yeah, Delgao's old but we all knew that. Watch and see what happens with Church, he's going to be better than most think. And we don't need an offensive catcher, Schnieder will hit .250 and I'll love it, because I'd rather a good defensive catcher over another butcher behind the plate. Castillo isn't our leadoff hitter either, genius. That would be Jose Reyes. You know, 80 steals, lead the league in triples Reyes? Yeah him. Our lineup is just as good as yours even with the over the hill gang baseball version rounding it out. We still have Reyes, Wright, and Beltran. I'm more worried about the Phils than the Braves. At least they have two pitchers that are credible. One more thing, John Maine is one of the most under reated players in the NL. Mark my words, he'll win AT LEAST 17 games. And he's our 3 (should be 2 though) who on the Braves will even win 15? I'll give you Smoltz IF he can stay healthy. We have the chance on 4 if Pedro stays healthy and if Perez can keep his head on straight. This division is Philly v. New York. Have fun watching both teams in october while Smoltz is teeing up with Tiger
