In a recent column, CBSSports.com staff writer Wes Goldstein evaluated this season's Calder Trophy race. Here are the rookies that Wes came up with.

Patrick Kane
, Blackhawks
Jonathan Toews, Blackhawks
Nicklas Backstrom, Capitals
Carey Price, Montreal
Peter Mueller, Phoenix
Matt Niskanen, Dallas
Sam Gagner, Edmonton
Tobias Enstrom, Atlanta
Milan Lucic, Boston
Alexander Edler, Vancouver
Brandon Dubinsky, NY Rangers
Josh Harding, Minnesota

Tell us what you think. Who do you like as rookie of the year?

I would go with Kane because him and Toews have basically been the Blackhawks team.  The tandem has taken them to an average team, up from being a horrible team.  The nod would have gone to Toews had he been healthy all year.

Carey Price is also a great story.  Had he actually been the number one starter all year that would of trumped Kane and Toews.  Considering playoffs are not going to be in play, that is also a knock against Price.  He is going into them as a starting rookie on a good team - which is quite an accomplishment.

I would also go Patrick Kane, but if Jonathan Toews would have been health all year I think he would of took it.

My top 5  Rank

  1. Patrick Kane- 77 GP   18 goals   47 Assist   65 pts   -9 +/-
  2. Jonathan Toews- 59 GP  21 goals  28 Assists  49 pts  +7  +/-
  3. Carey Price  20-12-3  W-L-OTL  2.71 GAA  .915 SA%  2 SO
  4. Nicklas Backstrom 77 GP  14 Goals  52 Assists  66 pts +11 +/-
  5. Peter Mueller- 76 GP 22 Goals  31 Assists 53 pts -9 =/-

Miigwech makes some excellent points and I certainly would understand if Patrick Kane took the Calder but my choice would be Nicklas Backstrom.  I can't punish Backstrom for being put on a line with Alex Ovechkin.  I believe Backstrom is a slightly better two way player than Kane.  Their numbers are very similar.  But Kane is a -9 and Backstrom is a +11.  I think that these are the top two choices for the Calder this year.

As Miigwech said, if Jonathan Toews was healthy all year long than maybe he would take it, but I would put him slightly behind the other two.  In my opinion, Casey Price didn't play enough to win the award.

Peter Mueller had a very nice rookie season down in Phoenix as well.  This year has had a nice spike in young talent joining the league.

Where is Cogliano on that list ?  He is 5th in rookie scoring but not on a list of 10+ players ?  What a joke.

That said i think backstrom has to get the nod.

Same as Gilbert ? He is second only to Enstrom in rookie dman scoring yet he isnt on a list of 10 ? Yet Niskanen is on there with 8 less pts than Gilbert as a dman ?

I know i am only naming Oilers right now but that is the team i know best. If he missed 2 guys on one team lord knows who else is missing from this list haha. And to have a guy like lucic on there is just laughable considering who was left out.

Whoops, I clearly meant Carey and not Casey Price.  Good points also Oil.  Both could have been on the list.  Though it is clear neither would be close in the voting.

I have to go with Patrick Kane...he is playing like a experienced pro on a young Blackhawks team that has a lot of potential in the future years to come. If Toews doesnt get hurt, then maybe he is in the discussion. The only 2 other viable candidates are Price and Backstrom, who are also having solid first seasons.....the one name I find it hard to believe that they are a rookie is Harding...I remember he played in a few games last season..I did not realize that he was a rookie still.

Backstrom certainly has to be given full consideration for the Calder Trophy. To look at his value from another angle I ask you, would Ovechkin have had the season that he has had without Backstrom setting him up? Of his 52 assists how many of those have benefited OV's goal scoring stats? Ovechkin is a great player but let's not forget the guy who has quietly, without much fanfare has put the puck on OV's stick many times in his rookie campaign.  This pair will be exciting to watch in years to come. Backstrom for the Calder.

I think Patrick Kane wins the Calder Trophy.

He leads all rookies in points and is a main reason why the Blackhawks are still in playoff contention this late in the season.

Carey Price has a chance if he has a phenomenal final seven or so games, but he has to be nearly flawless to prevent Kane from winning.

Backstrom has had a great season as well, but I agree Andrew Cogilano should definitely be on that list of outstanding rookies

After reading a few posts on this thread it seems people are torn between Backstrom and Kane.

I think Kane ought to win the Calder Trophy.

Even though his numbers are similar to Backstrom's, if Toews had been healthy all year, Kane's point total would be higher. Conversly, if Ovechkin had missed a few weeks, I'd say Backstrom's numbers would be slightly lower as well.

Do you have one of these players?

Satan, Miroslav RW NYI
Knuble, Mike RW PHI
Toews, Jonathan C CHI
Khabibulin, Nikolai G CHI

Still have your E-report emails for 3/23? If you could post or forward it to me I would be great. I am attempting to prove that these stats where incorrect and where updated on 3/25. Now a team lost on monday and won on tuesday. Screwing up our whole playoffs.

CBSuckSports is horrible.

So I need to get these E-report for 3/23 to see which players stats where wrong!

CBSuckSports took two days to respond and offered to rerun the stats???? thanks for nonthing.

Thanks

Sam Gagner is my pick!  What he has done this year for the Oilers is remarkable considering four of the Oiler top players are out for the season. Therefore, for Sam to step in and do his part and as a rookie speaks for itself.

I think Patrick Kane wins the Calder Trophy.

He leads all rookies in points and is a main reason why the Blackhawks are still in playoff contention this late in the season.
Actually.. at the moment, Kane does not lead in points, Backstrom does. Same number of games played, Backstrom's 66 pts., to Kane's 65. Backstrom has a few more assists, Kane a few more goals. Both have the same GW goals, OT goals, shooting pct. is close, Kane has a few more PP goals. The bigger difference is Backstrom's +11 to Kane's -9, and Kane has more than twice as many penalty minutes, if that means anything. And going by where the teams are in the standings.. Washington is 2 pts. from a playoff spot, Chicago is 6 away, with 3 other teams to jump over before they get there. And Washington has made a better improvement this year over last year (even within this year alone).. remember that just cuz Chicago got the #1 pick, they did not have the worst season last year, they were 5th worst, and the Capitals were right below them at 4th worst.

To the one that said:

would Ovechkin have had the season that he has had without Backstrom setting him up? Of his 52 assists how many of those have benefited OV's goal scoring stats? Ovechkin is a great player but let's not forget the guy who has quietly, without much fanfare has put the puck on OV's stick many times in his rookie campaign.
I don't think you can look at it that way.. Ovechkin is by far the better player, if anything, Ovechkin is making Backstrom better, not the other way around. Instead of putting it the way you did, you should ask would Backstrom have as many assists that he does if Ovechkin wasn't as great a scorer as he is?

With all that being said.. I think ya gotta still wait to see how the rest of the season plays out to see which one of these 2, if either, breaks free and puts some space between them in points. If it's still close, I think the voters would probably vote for Kane more, cuz he is the more recognizable name, being the #1 pick and all.. but Backstrom may end up with just a slightly better season.

One last note.. as for Toews, people said he would most likely get it had he played all the games. But he is less than a point a game now, and if you add in points that he would have averaged over that span.. he would still only be around the same place as the other top 2 guys.. the only difference is that he would have more goals. His assists are way below the other 2, but his goals are up. He would be in the talks, but it would still be hard to pick between the 3 of them.. but you might be able to make a case for Toews being better than Kane, but still be in a challenge with Backstrom, which he could win, but not quite a lock.
