The Devils travel across the Hudson tonight to take on the New York Rangers to try and finally get a win against them. This will be nothing short of a playoff game at the Garden, and the Devils really need to win this one. They're on a four game slide right now where they've been outscored 14-3. They're sitting at #4 overall in the conference, only leading the Senators based on their head to head record.
The Devils need to come out tonight and exceed the emotion the Rangers will be playing with. The past few games this team has been at an emotional disadvantage to teams that look hungrier and more ready to win. This game is against our most hated rivals, so I expect to see some big hits and physical play early.
The second thing the Devils must do is attack the net and get after rebounds and second chance opportunities. This team has let too many juicy rebounds go by over skating or just standing around the offensive zone. They need to get in front of Lundqvist and make him work for every save. If the Devils are just going to take Wild shots and not go after second chance opportunities, expect another shutout or one goal game. These guys need to just continually work in the offensive zone from the start of the game until the end. More plays like Asham's drive to the net will work well, and I think our forwards need to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.
I know there has been suggestions that Marty take a rest, but he will be between the pipes for this game. The rest of these games are extremely important, and the team needs to begin to put together some solid performances heading into the playoffs. Why not start playing well in the first of a doubleheader and get that long overdue win against the Rangers in the Garden? Also, just a side note, Gomez will be out of the lineup tonight for the Rangers.
LET'S GO DEVILS!

Might as well rest Brodeur; the fact of the matter is they can't score so whether they give up one goal or five goals it probably won't matter. Let the sieve Weekes play. Everyone talks about how he should play..... all I know is in the last three plus periods he has played he has given up seven goals. Why would you want to rest Marty?? Right now, he is the ONLY chance the Devils have of winning. Let Weekes play right wing.... he can't do much worse than the slop they are throwing out there now. Can you tell I'm bitter???
I have zero confidence in this team right now....... I don't even want to watch them anymore. All I do is get annoyed and want to fire the remote right through the TV. I really can't handle another poor, non-offensive effort.... and especially against the J.O. Rangers. I am tired of coming into work the day after a loss to the Rangers and listening to the A-Hole Rangers fan who sits next to me.
I just needed to vent a little. This team is going nowhere fast and it's really starting to get to me. I didn't have high expectations coming into the year, but then they got on a roll and I had a sense of hope.... starting to look like it was a false sense of hope.

Playing the Rangers without Gomez and the law of averages in the Devils favor in that eventually this year Marty has to beat the Rangers. Then again as Vman stated maybe even if Caron was in net with his second hip replacement it might not matter, they still need to score goals!!!.....ok maybe not Caron, how about Weekes,at least make the games entertainment and give this guy some work.

You want to fire the remote through the TV on this team? Try checking out the "early" Devils.
Easy to see when you became a fan, obviously not before '94.
Bad skid, but it can get reversed. Hockey can be interesting sometimes. Big games, rivalry games like this tend to bring out the best in players and teams. The Devils just need to start working together instead of players trying to do everything themselves and be the hero. I also would like to see the Captain step up and play with a little more spirit than the past few games.

I've been a fan long before 94, my friend. Been a fan since 85, I was just 11 at the time.......
And believe me, I punched many a hole through closet doors and walls in my parents' house when I was just a youngster (now 33) and a few in my own apartments. Haven't done it in the new house...... YET!!! My wife says she will throw me out if I do so I am trying to tone it down.
My problem is when they were bad, they were bad. I had no reason to get upset because I didn't expect them to win. But since the early 90's I've come to expect things from this team. That's what three cups and four total trips to the Finals will do to you. This team is about 30 goals scored away from running away with the Eastern Conference. That is why I am so frustrated. They are so close yet so far away.

VMAN, I'd have to agree with you. I'm a young guy (only 19), so I've grown up in the age of being a spoiled Devils fan. I didn't get to see the early happenings of this franchise (which, even though it was bad, I would have loved to watch). I take for granted that this team makes it to the playoffs every year and has been one of the more successful franchises in the league. And I've been yelled at by my girlfriend and mother for flipping out at the TV (or, when I'm in school and don't get MSG Plus, the laptop while listening to NHL Radio.)
You're assessment is absolutely correct. If this team could put in at least two goals a game they could be sitting atop the Eastern Conference. Instead, because the offensive well dried up, their battling for a good position. That's why I think tonight's game is so huge. How great would it be for the boys to hang up four or five on the Rags at home? It's going to be tough, no doubt, but they should come out looking to score goals and humiliate the Rags.
If the Devils can get on a roll tonight, they can bring some momentum into the Philly game tomorrow night and hang up another 7 on them. We'll have to see what happens, however. You can never count on this team to give you a goal.

A correction on tonight's lineups: Gomez is not scratched and is playing in tonight's game.

The early Devils were lovable losers, kind of like the Mets back in the early sixties (fan of both). No other hockey fan cared about playing the Devils or how the Devils did because they were so bad. Nobody really made fun because they knew and you knew how bad they really were. You really never got mad when they lost because you expected that to happen. 49ers, I hope your right about this "skid" we are in but we've been playing rivalry games over a week and a half now and nothings been coming out good. I do agree about the Captain stepping up and we need the ex-captain to play with a fire again like earlier in the year. We need more then one goal tonight. As always...........go Devils!!

I can understand and agree with what you are all saying in this thread - for me what makes it doubly frustrating is the emotional rollercoaster as a fan they have taken us on this year. Its one thing to accept a poor season - as a lifelong Cleveland Browns and Indians fan I know what this feels like - but going into this year with little expectations and then all of sudden finding the Devils at the top of the East - only to then give it all away the last 12 games of the year, is just frustrating for us all.
So these forums are the outlets some of use to express these frustrations. I will still route and cheer for them every night - and will celebrate with all of you when they win and b$Tch with you when they lose. If anything it shows how much passion we all have for this team.
Slow start to tonights game: 0 - 0 5:00 to go in the first...I leally like the way this Rupp line looks - I have a feeling they are going to score tonight.
Go Devils!!

gibby all of what you said is normal and natural for a fan to do and be.Even as some think we bicker and bit@h at each other, its all intelligent debate about a passion we have for a team we love, and the one or two stragglers who are lost are just part of the contingent that there are Devil fans and people that want to be Devils fans!!!!!!!!!!!

I am absolutely dumbfounded at the third period and at the turnout of this game. The Devils played a great two periods. They were able to take the punches from the Rangers but counter every one. They hung in their and were aggressive in the offensive zone. They did what we as fans had been pleading for. The first two periods of this game were good, other than the missed call by the ref on Avery and the powerplay goal on White's first penalty.
Then the third period happened. All of a sudden, this team reverted back into their earlier problems this season: they couldn't close out the game. They stopped skating and stopped taking shots and let the Rangers come back into the game. They needed to continually pressure Lundqvist and the Rangers team, and they just couldn't do it. And, of course, Nigel Dawes is the one to score the game winning goal on a flukey play. Zajac messed up there, and the Devils catch an unlucky break and can't hold on. Even with the man advantage, they only mustered two shots with 1:30 left.
I don't know about the other fans on this thread, but I'm absolutely speechless. I was on such an emotional high during the game, even after the Rangers tied it up. I thought this team was going to pull out a huge win. With that backbreaking goal, I was deflated. Gibby said something about a rollercoaster, and tonight's game was one of those games that leaves you feeling unsatisfied and dumbstruck. I can't believe they lost this game. I don't know what this team has to do to win one freakin game! I don't even know what to think right now. I'm actually numb with awe that the Devils could blow this game.
Aren't we the team with the reputation of getting a lead and closing out games? Where has this ability gone? I'm speechless...

Unbelievable losing 4 in a row. Garbage goal by Dawes. I have been confident with this team all year long. Now? after seeing them the last two nights I cannot believe how terrible our defense is playing. This may be sacrilege but please, please give Mottau more ice time. He fights for everything and is rarely out of position. Same with Oduya, he is a scrapper who goes after everything and is speedy.
Please, please, please stop playing Martin. I can't take it anymore. he has no slapshot, holds the puck too long and is out of position at least three times a night. At Tuesday's game I was there with my friend who is a Penguins fan. I told him, just watch P. Martin on his shifts. He agreed with the assessment. Am I the only that sees this boneheadedness?
Colin White: terrible penalty to start the third period tonight. He is like Daneyko. He plays well for 54 minutes but you just know at one point he will do something that makes you shake your head. The things is, with Martin now, we cannot have brain farts from Colin.
As someone said earlier in the posts, I am just venting but losing 7 straight to the Rangers and not doing anything against the Islanders is unacceptable. I am so frustrated. This was their division to lose and they did it.
Can Sutter please teach these guys how to crash the net the way the rest of the league does against Marty? Seriously is that too much to ask?
Well only a handful of games left to prove they belong in the playoffs. I hope they get their act together because the chant at the end of the game tonight was BS. However, as I said to friends who are Rangers fans: better to be 0-7 in the regular season then get swept by your crosstown rival in the playoffs.
