In the news of the extremely unusual, The Wisconsin Men's Hockey team has made the 16 team NCAA Hockey tourney as a 3 seed, playing in the Madison Regional.  Check out USCHO.com for the story.  Despite our crappy finish and sub .500 record, we snuck into the field because of our Pairwise ranking that was still in the top 16.

There are a record  6 count em 6 WCHA teams in the tournament field this year.  Along with Bucky we have St Cloud,CC,Denver,Minnesota, and No Dak.  All I can say is Wow!  Well lets see if we can make anything out of this second chance.

Another note, While we are hosting the Madison Regional, there are 3 WCHA teams in the Midwest region.  No 1 No Dak plays No 4 Princeton,  while the Badgers face second seeded Denver.  The home ice advantage we get from playing in Madison, seems like it will definitely be tempered by the fact that 2 of the other teams in the regional have extensive experience with the Kohl Center crowd.

Er, sorry about that.  I was about to head over to uwbadgers.com after I checked Sportsline out to find out if they'd gotten in or not.  I honestly didn't think they'd be in after their poor end to the season.  But this definitely makes the $75 tickets to this weekend's games (four rows from the glass and next to the Badger bench) more than worth it.

Also, it would have been nice to see someone that wasn't from the WCHA.  But it's kind of hard to be fair with seeding and placement when there's SIX, read that again, SIX teams from the WCHA in the sixteen team field.  That's also helps to explain how the Badgers got in without having that great a year: the WCHA was just crazy good this year.

Do we have any idea when the Elite Eight game the basketball team might be playing in will be on Sunday?  My day was already full with work until 6 and the hockey game starting at 6 as well.  Getting there late wasn't going to be a problem, but if the Badgers are playing then I'll want to be there as soon as possible.  Toss a possible basketball game to watch in there as well and my weekend just filled up in a hurry.

It just occurred to me that both the basketball and hockey teams could be playing Elite Eight games at the same time.  That would be a delightful coincidence.

I'd like to point out that I got a -108 rating for my exclamation of joy above.  Which also got me to thinking, what's the lowest score possible?  What's the lowest other people have gotten?

Great NEws, and for hockey novices the Badgers were not chosen because fo money or any other subjective reason. College Hockey uses a formula (sort of BCS in nature) called the Pairwise rankings, that are used as gossiple. If you are in the top 16 teams you are in, if you are not you are out. Somehow Wisky finished in the top 16 (I am surprised) and I am happy for them. I hope they make good use of this second chance they've given and the "gift" of being able to play the first rounds in the Kohl Center. I may actually get back from Texas in time to go check out some games, we'll see

I'm fairly certain I'll be in Sec 123 Row 4.  How awseome would it be if I got seat 5?
