Well, first off, isnt it funny that this seasons end was plagued by an injury to a player most were not too fond of just like last year (Last year: Butch, This year: Hughes). Not saying we win with Hughes, but it's not a blowout and we at least have a chance.

Also, as I brought to up to my buddies who I was watchin the game with, this type of situation is one in which not having a star player hurts the Badgers. We pride ourselves too much on the fact that our players stay in school four years and don't leave early for the draft. We focus a lot on in-state prospects who dominate the high school scene in WI and then don't do much in college (Morris Cain, Keaton Nankivil). I really feel we need to go nationwide with recruiting and try to get players with individual talent. When an offense is out of sync like last night, you need that star player. Someone who can lead the team back and possibly get others back in rhythm.

I'm not saying we need Michael Beasley or Kevin Love, but a Joe Alexander/D.J. White/Drew Nietzel type player would, I think, finally get this team over the hump.

I fail to see what those to prove.  Cain is a walk-on that got a scholarship this year because Bo was banking it for next year, and Nankivil is a freshman who will see significant time next year but was behind Landry, Stiemsma, Butch, and Leuer this year.

3 things.

1) The next two years don't have a single recruit from Wisconsin (although the 2009 class isn't filled out, yet).  See Wisconsin.scouts for the list.  Two from Minnehaha, one from Ohio, one from Texas, one from Pennsylvania.

2) Guys like Cain getting scholarships is one of the things I like most about Bo Ryan.  He sets an example for the rest of the team by showing a hard working guy can be rewarded, even if he won't contribute much during games.

3) They've done pretty good with their Wisconsin guys.

The states I mentioned were for the 2008 class.  The 2009 class has one guy from Chicago and another from Minnehaha.

Diamond Taylor and Markolf, to certain extent, project to be those type of players. A guy who might be able to make the most immediate impact would be Jamil Wilson if we're lucky enough to land him. Berggan and Taylor will be good too

I'm not saying we haven't done well with WIS players. It's obvious that we have.

I just feel that going nation-wide and getting individually gifted players would really help us. I'm not saying we need all players like this, but one or two would definitely be nice.

I was looking at our upcoming draft class and I like the seven footer we got from Texas. I think he could make an impact with Butch and Stiemsma gone.

Something else I forgot to mention about in-state prospects is that WIS has to battle with MARQ and they could steal some away and some leave the state (Jerry Smith, Korie Lucious).

With that said, I really hope we land Jamil Wilson. I think he's going to be a stud.

Nope.  He will most likely get minimal time.  Berggren is much better right now, and Markolf needs a year or two to get footwork and other things up to speed.

Something else I forgot to mention about in-state prospects is that WIS has to battle with MARQ and they could steal some away and some leave the state (Jerry Smith, Korie Lucious).Bo had no interest in Lucious, or Johnnie Lacy fot that matter.  Neither have to body to play Badger basketball.  Jerry Smith was ready to commit to Wisconsin, but canceled his press conference after JBo committed.  Bo has gotten pretty much every player from the state of Wisconisn that he wanted.

First off, comparing Nankivil and Cain is ludicrous.  Like several other people have said, Cain was a walk on and Nankivil was a top 100 4-star recruit who, more importantly, fits perfectly in Bo's system.  Is he future NBA draftee, probably not but I think he'll be a nice player for Wisconsin.

Also, it's funny how soon we forget, but wasn't it just last year that we had the runner-up national POY, an incredibly athletic guy, a guy that got drafted in the first round?  Isn't this the exact type of player you're talking about?  And you'll say "yeah, one guy".  Well, Wasn't it just 3 or 4 years ago that Devin Harris was also that type of player?  And to a lesser extent, Kirk Penney before him?

You can't have that type of player every year (look at Florida this year), but we're doing ok as far as star talent.  As I see it, Bo and the Badgers haven't quite hit their peak just yet.  I really like the players they have coming in the next couple of years.  Kids are starting to buy into the program.  I'd guess that we'll make it to a Final Four in the next 3 years and win one within the next five...just a hunch.

janderson NAILED this one. Bo could get the guys from all over the nation, but they are a different type of player. look at tucker last season. he was GREAT. but those are the types of national stage players that are out there. Bo could certainly get a top prospect from just about anywhere, as the badgers are a winning program. However, its the kids that are going in the nba draft 1st round, that need to get thier 28pt a game. that NEED to get thier 35 min a game. The wisconsin system doesnt have room for that. it has room for humble, hard nosed scrappers, like bo has, and like bo continues to get. I like the teams we're putting up, and i dont really think Bo needs to change a whole lot, if anything. His system works. His recruiting works. His coaching works.

Thank you Wisconsin for such a GREAT season. Its truly been a joy to watch the boys in red! on wisconsin.
