Johan Santana looked solid today, as did David Wright. My Braves have started, by losing to the Pirates and Nationals. Obviously nothing to brag about here, but congrats on the good start today. I seriously hope it is a strong healthy season for both sides. I don't want it to come down to whoever gets injured less. The Braves have had too many errors, and the errors were what cost us BOTH games. but at least our offense got started in the last game. I can't wait for next week, and our series against you guys. I think John Smoltz will be starting for us, but i don't know who your pitcher will be. Do you guys know? I also can't wait until you guys take it to the Phillies. They've alrady showed their pitching is lacking. They can score, but can't stop them. But then again, there is a particular braves BP guy who I can say the same thing about. Anyway...good luck guys.
Oh, and do you guys think there is any chance of John Maine moving ahead of Pedro Martinez in the rotation if he doesn't perform well? I personally think Tom Glavine will be moved back to the 4th or 5th spot for us by seasons end.
I too enjoy a healthy rivalry between our clubs. I also appreciate you coming here as a fan of a rival team and being curtious to the people who read it. There are not enough posters out there like you.
Back to baseball. The Braves have had a rough go of it the past couple of days, but I don't think that will be indicitive of their performance all year. I think the Braves will be strong contenders with the Mets while the Phillies fall to the wayside when they realize that slugging without pitching doesn't win championships.
I honestly feel that John Maine is already our #2 starter, regardless of where he pitches in the rotation. Pitching order won't matter again until the playoffs anyway. Also, this way the Mets have two stoppers in the rotation who are separated by a maximum of two games in either direction... that can seriously limit the chances of an extended losing streak.
Good to have you in our camp talking good clean baseball. I agree with dpay that we need more of this rather than the crap you always see. Good post. I would say that we have 2a and 2b with a healthy Pedro and Maine. Again a healthy Pedro. I have always thought of Maine as a rising star and before Santana as our opening day starter. I think he is really going to blossom this season. To answer your question.....Yes, I do think he will be our #2 before the season ends. I still do not know what to think of el Duque, but time will cetainly tell.
The Nats wall will certainly come down, but hopefully not until they have won two more games. I know it will be a great race between the Mets, Braves and Phillies. That is what makes baseball fun. The Race. I really believe it keeps you focused throughout the playoffs as well. Anyway nice post and good luck this season.

I agree on having a healthy reasonable discussion. Ok, now I have to disagree with Maine being considered the #3 guy. I'm a big fan of Maine, his competitive nature & good stuff, and I think he's poised to have a terrific season but don't underestimate Pedro. I think the guy has one last strong season left in him. He's extremely competitive, he's healthy and I think having Santana around will just push him to give it all he's got. He's still only a 6 inning guy but if the bullpen can hold the fort then I think he'll rack up a good # of wins. Either way, as long as the lineup scores some runs then the Mets staff will take care of the rest.
Well like everyone has said it is definitely nice to see fans of other teams coming here and wanting to have a respectful baseball conversation. Living in Atlanta I run into a bunch of obnoxious Braves fans that just want to talk trash especially since we have finished ahead of you guys the past 2 years, of course I do my fair share as well. Anyway to answer your question about who is pitching this weekend, Maine and friday, Pelfrey on Saturday and Johan on Sunday. I will be there Saturday and Sunday, hope to see some good games with Met victories as outcomes. Let Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!

On to the meat, the Philly’s have who on there staff??? Hamles then.........Myers with a 4+ life time ERA climbing every year; Moyer who farts dust and is in the same boat as Myers; Kendrick a 9.68 ERA in five spring-training starts (that's good). No pitching means no pennant. The Nats are young and dumb - a scary combo; they will be a scrappy team all year. Looking forward to another battle with the Braves this year. <o:p> </o:p>
Tommy G looked pretty good for an old man last night. I hated that many of your fans blamed him for the team not making the playoffs and called him garbage, escpecially after he went 13-8 and had the fifth most quality starts in the league last season (basically did the same as maine and pelfrey and everyone praised them).
he served up yet another quality start for us yesterday. 5 innings, 1 run , left game with 4-2 lead.
To respond above to the Maine as a #2 above Pedro quote. Pedro is still Pedro - assuming he is healthy. He came back in after surgery last year and went a 3-1 with a 2.5 ERA and 32 K's. Solid numbers! Unless Pedro falters hard this season, he is still our number two (and may continue to be our number 2 for the next couple of year as a good year will bring around a new contract!)
In terms of the above quote, no Mets fan said Tommy G was garbage. We just said in his old age he has become erratic and you never know what you are going to get out of him. the only fact that is for certain is he won't hit more than 6 innings. He gave as many 6+ runs in 7 games last year. finished the year with a 4.45 ERA and would have been higher if he didn't have a 2.8 ERA in April with a 3-1 record. After April he was 10-7, in September he was 2-2 with a 6.1 ERA. Not exactly worth the money he was getting paid and certainly not clutch. I like Tommy G, hes great for the club house and a great caring person, but I really think he should have retired and I 100% think the Braves paying him 8 million is criminally insane!
Well we lost Pedro tonight with a hamstring injury so the injuries have started. I hope this thread didnt jinx us, and is the beginning of things to come this year. As for Maine, I think hes going to be a stud for us this year. I see him winning up to 17 games and possible the Mets first No Hitter. I wish I could say the same for Glavine.......actually no I dont, but like you said i see him dropping in the rotation. I just cant get that image of him out of my head of the last game of last year. The game that we needed him the most and he just had nothing.
I actually think the loss of Alou is much worse then the loss of Pedro. I think the rotation can survive w/o Pedro but the lineup looks so weak from 6-9 w/o Alou and if Delgado doesn't regain some of his stroke then the lineup is weak from 5-9. Hopefully he'll return from that hernia before May b/c I think this lineup is going to have issues scoring runs against better pitching teams i.e. Braves, D-Backs, Dodgers etc.
