are the Chargers really pleased starting Clinton Hart and Eric Weddle at the two safety spots?? that is, unless they have picked up somebody without my knowledge.

Weddle, yes, he was a high second round pick last year (or maybe year before) and is great in coverage. He will continue to be a starting player in this defense and is so flexible that he could potentially be used as a nickel cornerback. A solid player who really characterises the talent that AJ Smith brings in.
Clinton Hart is a player who can survive in the NFL, athough by no means will he be outstanding. The problem for the Chargers is that the only real quality safety in this year's draft is Kenny Phillips from Miami and he could quite easily go before the Chargers pick (he's top 15 is some mocks, top 25 in others). Apart from him the safety class is fairly weak so it might be better value to try and pick up a guy in the later rounds to give Hart some competition rather than spend a first round pick on a questionable prospect. Either way, I reckon that Smith will make a good pick with his first round option - he hasn't let us down the past few times (Castillo, Merriman etc). Craig Steltz from LSU is a potential option if he pursues the safety route

I also think if the Chargers wait they might be able to pick up a combo player like Charles Godfrey from Iowa. He played CB is last 2 years but is really better suited as a safety as he never really learned the proper foot work as a CB. I'm sure there are other players as well that have this same failing but from looking at Godfrey's workouts he is fast and has good size (6-0, 208 and runs 4.38-4.5 range). I think Horton out of UCLA might work or even Bobbie Williams who went to a small school. I think the draft has a lot of defensive backs who could play both postions. The only real drawback of this is most of the players do not excell at either position so it is a little risky. But if it's a late round pick why not?

I think the Chargers are happy, for now, with Eric Weddle and Clinton Hart as safeties. They are both viable starters. They are also thin at corner because Paul Oliver is an unknown commodity. So if the Chargers go CB early and he ends up with significant playing time, I think Quentin Jammer could get some time at safety if needed.
Go Chargers!

I live locally in San Diego, however I am a proud RAIDER4LIFE. I read the newspaper often because I am an NFL fan second and its safe to say that Chargers GM AJ Smith is very pleased with the play of FS Eric Weddle and SS Clinton Hart.
Clinton Hart was rewarded for his efforts with a new contract and former starting FS Marlon McCree was let go because of Weddles relentless ability to always be around the ball (picking off Manning in the 4th qtr in the divisional game cemented his starting role).
They were both integral in the Chargers push towards the playoffs starting in the second half. Their athleticism and ball-hawking style have helped the Chargers become the class of the AFC (outside of New England).
Just look at what they did:
Led the league in INT, dominated Tennessee in the Wild-Card game, picked apart Peyton Manning and that potent offense, and nearly upset the Patriots all without their healthy big 3 Offensive stars: LT (strained MCL), A.Gates (broken big toe), and Phillip Rivers (torn ACL).
Kudos, to the Chargers GM for making his team the easiest pick in the AFC West, let alone the AFC conference.
BLAH!!!
GO Raiders!

Chargers should be alright, although with Turner calling the shots it could get ugly. Now that LT has felt pain it should be interesting to see if he will be the same. Raiders should improve quite a bit. Hopefully the schedule will be a little easier this time.

RoadieRaider, why do you think the Raiders will be any better this year? Just because they overpaid for a bunch of FA's? A bunch of castoffs? Or because J-Russell has nearly eaten himself to match the Round-Mound in NY?
Also, didn't the Raiders play a last place schedule last year? How much easier could it get?
In any case, this thread is about the Chargers and they ARE the class of the West.

blksunday,
As a Bolts fan, thanks for the props to AJ Smith. However, I fear for the Raiders this year - their only saving grace in my opinion is that they have four potential wins against the Broncos and Chiefs (who I think will get the 1st pick in the 2009 draft)
