Year after year the Philadelphia Phillies get off to a slow start. Last year there were 7-8 games back by the end of April of the Mets. They did have a great 2nd half, but can a team continuously start the season off poor and always get out of the hole they dig.

this year, they are about to go to 0-3. They are behind the Nationals 5-0 in the first inning today. Now I'm not saying their season is over by any means, and it isn't. But this has to be a concern to the Phillie fans.

The Nationals look a lot stronger this year then they have in a long time. The Braves are going to be much better than last year. The Mets have Santana and even though the have lost Pedro for 6 weeks, they do have John Maine and Oliver Perez who are undoubtedly 2 of the strongest middle of the rotation guys in all of the National league.

Can the Phillies fall behind as many games this year as they have in the past and expect to come back? Possibly with the trio of stars on offense, but they have to get better pitching if they want to compete.

Because they relied too much on  hitting and forgot to get pitchers.  So when it is cold, the whole team is cold.  They will get better, but I think the fans are in for a surprisingly sad summer this year.

Larry,

The teams in the East have gotten better from last year, so if they in fact fall behind 7-10 games, i just don't see them catching up. April, unless it is in South Florida is notorious for a pitchers month like you said.

The Mets had a team ERA in the 2's last April.  They better start swinging the bats or it is going to be a long month for them.

Agree Larry, My best guess is the Phillies are built on hitting and April up North is not ideal hitting weather. I will say Hamels looked good yesterday but the Phillies sure made journyman Redding look like a Cy Young canidate. Although baseball is long season it is very difficult to continually start off slow exspecially when most of your regulars are healthy because injuries will come like every team has to go through.

I was very impressed the way the Phills came back last year but they also had to get help from our beloved Mets to make the playoffs. This year will be different because they are the defending NL East champs, there will be alot more pressure to perform early.

The reason for the slow start IMO...

I dont care who the team is or who's on the team... when you run into a team that is hot and clicking on all cylinders there momentum takes over.  Great teams find a way to put the fire out and no disrespect to the Phillies... they are not great.  Mets became apart of this at the end of last season.  Again... IMO

On a lighter side, maybe having Paul Loduca and Lastings Milledge is key... thats funny!

It also makes me wonder if they are all set on the homerun swings. Think about it.  They have had the past 2 MVP players, and are hoping for a third in a row.  A lot of players think the only way to get MVP is to swing for the fence. (see Andruw Jones).  Swinging for the fence=more outs=lower batting average=lower runs=more losses (i should be a math major)

I dont know if the Phillies are losing because they are swinging for the fences so they can become the next MVP???  Thats a little crazy IMO.

Heck, while were at it maybe the Phillies want to give the Mets a head start so they can pray they fall apart again at the end of the year givning the Phillies another heroic oppurtunity... LOL

Welcome to the 2008 season the Philadelphia Phillies Offense. Nice job scoring 6 in the 6th to take a 7-6 lead. Lets see if your bullpen can hold it now.

7-7 with Jayson Werth at bat. Force out at 2nd, and the Phillies leave the bases loaded. A missed golden opportunity.

Name a team expecting to compete with worse starting pitching than the Phillies...Absolutely terrible

Their bats are still cold from spring weather, they didn't fix their bullpen, it is April, yada yada yada.

It is not how you start, it is how you finish. Perfect example. 5-0 = 7-7.

Cowvboy,

I was being a little sarcastic about the start. however, they do have a major problem that lies ahead. Other than Hamels, what starting pitching do they have that they can rely on.

Meyers could be very good, but he hasn't been able to stay on the filed nor show consistency starting. Moyer showed you today why he is nothign more than a 5 starter. They still have Adam Eaton i believe. And Kendrick is in his first full season this year.

Paydirt hit it right on the nose. What team is expecting to compete in either league with worse pitching than the Phillies.

And least year as well as they performed in September , especially beating the Mets H2H, they still only made the playoffs because of the "CHOKE".

It coudl be a very disappoining season for the Phillies. Could be. I dont' think they can carry the whole load on offense all year.

You answered your own question EMTB. It almost always takes time for the hitters to catch up to the pitchers, or for the weather to equalize things. bottom 9th Colome on for the Nats.
