San Diego Chargers Needs in the Draft

The San Diego Chargers had a great overall year last season accomplishing part of their goal. This Charger team is the best team I've seen the Chargers have since Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson, Chuck Muncie, and Kellen Winslow. Quick question. Are we cursed to never win a Super Bowl? I mean cause that team alone should have won at least 3. Unbelievable aint it. Well anyway. The Chargers real need is DE. I really have questioned Luis Castillo's ability to stay healthy for a full season. We haven't seen that yet. I just think we need to get a guy who can step in there and be a Pass Rushing specialist like a Calais Campbell from Miami or Phillip Merling from Clemson. Those two guys showed the ability to get to the QB and stopping the run very well. The Chargers second need is Safety. I think they adress that in later rounds of the draft by looking at Kevin Mitchell from Illinois. This is a guy who can play both Safety positions and can ultimately take Clinton Hart Starting job in a few years. The Chargers 3rd need in the Draft I believe is RB, they need a guy with the tough and physical mind and I think a possibility here is Chauncey Washington from USC. He is a big guy who can run you over and I think he would fit the offense and step right in and contribute in the backfield along with all-world RB LaDainian Tomlinson. The Chargers are stacked with talent and should be heavy favorites to reach the AFC Championship again in the 08-09 season. Anything but The Super Bowl would be a failure for Norv Turner's San Diego Chargers

I'd rather draft Cory Boyd (South Carolina) than Chauncey Washington.  We could get Boyd with a 5th round pick.

I say Chargers will draft a RT or CB with their 1st round pick.  The talent is there (Cherilus at RT and CB's are deep this year).

Meanwhile, the only 1st round (27th pick) DT/DE seems to be Kentwan Balmer, but he's not your classic NT at 305 lbs.  He might be a good DE (Cambell is good, too).  I doubt if Merling will be there at pick #27.

As a outside opinion & loyal Raider Fan,

I have to agree with LightsOut. There is no way Campbell will drop that low to the 27th pick, teams like Tennessee and Minnesota are in need of pass rushing ends as well. I think the real pressing need for the Bolts are to draft a long term OT (Cherilus or Otah) if they are afforded the opportunity to drop that far down.

As much as people would like to say depth at RB and CB are needs, I think DE is where your GM will go. Take a look at the contracts that are going to expire after the season and next. Your all-star defense will have players who will be looking to cash in on their new found success (Castillo and Olshansky). I honestly think DE will be looked at considerably for the long run and possible replacement of either, who just can't seem to shake the injury bug.

CB depth may be adressed later in the draft due to AJ's taking of Paul Oliver in the Supplemental draft last year.

A safety may be a possibility however, do you really think AJ would settle for a FS/SS with the 1 and only pick on the 1st day?

Look for your poker player GM to broker a trade for a 2nd and a 3rd or 4th round pick for his lone 1st round pick at 27. No matter what, I wouldn't question him...  you guys aren't where you are today without his questionable moves, like letting favorite clubhouse & veteran leaders go in D. Brees, D. Edwards, Lo'Neal, etc.

I just wish we had a owner who would let his GM & coaches have a say in player personnel.

Just an outside opinion. I'd trade all the Free-Agents we signed and our 1st rounder for your GM any day. Blah!

Oh well, just giving you bolts props on doing it the right way (through the draft)... anyway, i'll still root for my team... Go Raiders!

See you guys at the Q when we invade this upcoming season yet again!

Nice take Blk Sunday,

I hear what everyone is saying about DE.  I just hate to think we take a potential backup with our one and only 1st day pick.  The DE's can be re-signed (we have the cap room).  I would hate to gamble that Clarey can keep Rivers upright all season long.  Clarey is not particularly powerful as a run-blocker either.

Cherilus would be a nice pick-up at #27, as for the later rounds the Chargers can still get a decent RB- to fill in the void Michael Turner, CB- with last year the secondary made strides in getting better then by drafting another CB to improve on the success for this year. As for NT- could always draft a DT big enough and hopefully can adjust to being a NT to eventually replace the great Jamal Williams.

Go Bolts !!! I wish it was April 26th already.

Charger fans should expect AJ Smith to make a few moves with his picks since he only has 5 (1st, 2-5th's, 6th & 7th) picks. AJ might trade down from the 27th pick to pick up a 2nd & another lower rd pick  or for him to trade some choices in next years draft to acquire a pick between the middle rds. The draft is deep in OT's & CB's but they'll need OG's as well since Goff is UFA next year & Mruczkowski is the only backup Goff & Dielman. Paul Oliver is being thought of more as as safety than a CB because of his lack of speed. So CB is more of a need for that vacant nickel back - due to the fact that Cletis Gordon and Steve Gregory are the only CBs (aside from Oliver) on the roster. Backup RB is also a need but not sure how much of a priority AJ will place on the need since CB, OT & OG is more of a priority. There isn't any NT prospects that are worthy of being drafted high and think that DE is more a need as well because the defense experiences a precipitous drop off when Castillo (tends to be injury-prone) is not there. Olshansky is much-improved and Cesaire & Bingham are adequate backups. Plus all 4 of them are signed till at least 2009. But you never know with AJ Smith although you know to trust in him though!!
