I'm confused here, if he gave up 1 run and the Mets scored 1 run wouldn't he get the ND and the guy who came in after him that gave up the 2 runs get the L.
:::Preemptive statement:::
I have made threads like this before and and CBS has gone back and fixed their mistake thereby making me look like an idiot, I assure you that Santana was saddled with the loss when I made this thread

When Santana left, the Mets were losing, and the Braves never lost the lead. Hence, Santana gets the loss. If the Mets had tied the game or gone ahead at any time, then Santana could have gotten the no-decision.

Yes they did score one run, but when Santana came out the Mets were losing, and the Braves never lost their lead. That is why he got scored with the loss, which sucks considering he had a good outing.

I must be mistaken, I didn't think that is how games are scored, so, for example, team A is losing 1-0 in the 7th and their starter comes out, they don't score any in the bottom of the inning leaving it 1-0 at the end of 7. Team B then scores 8 runs of of the reliever in the top of the 8th making it 9-0, then team A scores 8 runs in the bottom of the 8th making it 9-8 in this scenario the starter gets the L? Seems wack to me, I always thought if you team matched the amount of runs you gave up it got pushed to the next guy, but I guess I'm wrong.

It would make more sense like that but only Hockey uses that formula for the game winning shot.
When Santana left they Mets were down and never recovered enough to tie or go ahead, as long as they are playing catch up then he gets the loss.

because he was still the "pitcher of record" had the Mets tied it then he would have gotten a nd but the Braves added 2 more b4 the mets scored so he gets the loss and conversely smoltz was the "por" when the 1st run was scored he gets the win - thats the way it works even the the winning run wasn't technically until the 8th inning

The Mets didn't score a run until the 9th inning...so how would Johan get the no decision? He left after the 7th if I'm not mistaken.

The Mets never came back and took the lead, thus, Santana is the pitcher of record, regardless of whether or not the Mets scored as many runs as Santana gave up.

If the Braves took the lead and never relinquished that lead, then the pitcher that gave them the lead is the pitcher that takes the loss.

It's just like the other people have said, the Braves never lost their lead. If the Mets had tied it up (i.e.: they made it 1 to 1 instead of 3 to 1) then Santana would have not been on the hook for the loss. Conversely, for example, Tim Hudson did not lose the opener of the season this year to Washington because he left the game with the lead. If he had given up the lead and the Braves had not scored any more runs, then Hudson would have been saddled with the loss instead of the bullpen getting the loss. Hope that explains it...if you need anything else explained with baseball, feel free to message me.

I have to call dipshitskee on this one...when another pitcher comes in with inherited runners on base, Santana is still responsible for them...he lost the game...PERIOD...

It never ceases to amaze me how some fans and certain media outlets can skew a story. I just finished watching the Sportscenter recap of the game, and all they talked about was how great Santana pitched. They completely failed to show the run he gave up. Nor did they show Smoltz shutting down the Mets. To watch the clips, you would have thought the Mets dominated the Braves. Right at the end of the report they threw in the fact that the Braves won.
"Oh.... by the way.... Santana gave up a run..... Smoltz didn't..... the Braves won.... but Santana is still God."
I guess the media (and a WHOLE LOT of people on these boards) feel stupid for talking up Santana and talking down Smoltz so much, so they're just going to pretend today never happened. Yeah, Santana pitched a good game. But Smoltz pitched a better game... where is his due?
