Holy $hit-

That's a lot of $$$ for a guy who is essentially the second coming of Trent Dilfer. He plays on a team built with an awesome running game and a solid D. All they ask him to do is make the occasional pass and NOT TURN THE BALL OVER.

That situation sounds...exactly like what Trent Dilfer did in Baltimore! I will admit Gerrard has more mobility (as evident on the scramble against my Steelers that got the Jags in FG range) but Tony Romo money? They are polar opposites.

Romo throws the ball all over the field, but makes costly mistakes.

Garrard throws the ball to swing backs and TE's and barely makes any mistakes.

So what's the difference? Tony Romo has the talent and the arm and can learn to limit the mistakes and learn to read Defenses.

David Garrard has already learned to limit the mistakes, but he can't learn skills and arm strength.

Romo has a huge upside, Garrard is about as good as he's gonna get.

but he can't learn skills and arm strength. I think he has enough skills to be a very good NFL QB. But I won't argue there. But his Arm Strength? He could throw it nearly 70 yards in highschool. He's got plenty.

I should have said "Accurate Arm Strength" there's a difference between throwing a ball 70 yards and throwing a ball 70 yards into coverage while hitting a receiver in stride. He is not adept at the latter.

Michael Vick can chuck a ball 85 yards, that didn't make him a prolific passer or a long ball threat either.

Why would you even mention Romo's name in this argument...Romo is an awesome QB who deserves the money...he's not overpaid

Yes, I think that a monetary comparsion could be made but Garrard is a good QB in his own right, therefore deserving the money in a different way.

I think the Jaguars would have been better just sticking with a two-QB set that you can use Garrard on passing and Leftwich on runs (or vice-versa)

I get the point. Garrard isn't the elite $10 million a year kind of QB that the contract indicates, but Trent Dilfer? Mistake-free? The guy threw more INTs than TDs over the course of his career. Dilfer has a career 70 QB rating.

Give Garrard a little more credit than that. Even in spot duty, Garrard has thrown more TDs than INTs in each of the past five seasons.

The Jags should have waited until draft day and gave him 25 million for 4 years, he really has not established himself as a premier passer or a really great QB.

Garrard led the Jags last year to just about every franchise record for scoring, passing efficiency, passing plays over 20 yards, touchdowns, rushing by a QB...go look at his stats again from last year and I think most people will be surprised, it's just that Jacksonville doesn't get the press coverage, so most people have no idea. Not to mention, he's done all this after battling back from Chron's disease. Not too shabby.

As far as a Romo comparison, remember Garrard does not have a T.O. to chuck it to on every play as Romo. Imagine how much better Garrard would be if he did (would Romo still look that good if he didn't?).

Barring injury, Garrad will easily become the Jags best quarteback in franchise history, and his contract is well deserved.

Why do they sign these mediocre guys to such huge contracts? He probably won't be in the NFL in 6 yrs!

I understand what you are saying but Garrard has that mentality where he can lead and win the big games when it counts- like against Pitt.He flew under the radar for years just like most of the greats did at some point. Its good to finally get that franchise qb, something we have lacked since the days of Brunnell. It helps with th edynamic of the team

Yeah, how could they give him Tony Romo money? He doesn't even date anyone famous and you never see him hanging out with any hollywood stars. In all seriousness though, I can see why some people will think this is too much after only one year but if you had seen him play all year like us Jags fans you might think different. First off, he has a rocket arm and can fit passes in very small spaces, so this notion that he doesn't have arm strength coupled with accuracy is just a result of not being familiar with him. He's a smart QB, evident by the fact he only threw 5 ints all year including the playoffs. He also has the character to overcome adversity, from his battle with Chrons disease (probably didn't spell that right), to winning a tough playoff game in the opponents home field. Thats my opinion, but I can see why some would think its too much.

Also, look at the receivers he had to work with last year. He made them look good.

What is all this Chrones disease BS.

I used to work with a guy that had Chrones and that didn't stop him from getting drunk everynight and eating Bar food, let alone playing in a pickup hockey league.

It's not like the guy lost a nut to cancer and came back to play QB.

That's like saying how great a baseball player is that has overcome his hay fever allergies to play in the spring and fall when polen and mold spores are in the air.
