Although it is still early, I had written in a couple of these threads how disappointed that I was that the Crew decided to sign Jason Kendall. It certainly looks like I was wrong. I thought Kendall was washed up. Old, and coming off of his worst year by far, I just didn't realize he had anything left. After watching the first six games of this year, it certainly looks like another astute signing by Melvin.

By the way, I just moved to the state of Washington in the last year, and how cool is the Comcast MLB Extra Innings package. I don't miss a game.

I've decided that I like this signing.. Obviously it's still early, and it's easy to like him when he's hitting .500, but it's his catching that impresses me. One of the first things that Ben Sheets had to say today in his post-game interview was that Kendall called a great game and that he didn't have to shake him off too many times. Sheeter also commented during spring training that it felt like he wasn't alone on the mound when Kendall is catching. With guys like Fielder, Braun, and Hart, I don't need Kendall to hit .300 this year. I just want him to keep handling our pitchers like he has been.

i agree. At first i didnt like it either,I wanted to see rivera gett the chance to ge tthe starting catcher spot. I thought kendall was done with his career. But he has always been a good game caller and he has deffinately brought that here to milwaukee early on.  His offense is nice so far, but even if it drops, which it eventaully will, he is still a key piece on this team with his ability to call a good game. I also like the fact that rivera can start and catch parra and possibly gallardo because he knows them from minor league play and can keep them comfortable, although yogo proved fine last year.

So far, I like the signing of Kendall.  He calls a good game and is hitting so far this year.  Maybe, just maybe, the nine hole is helping him maintain that very good career of hitting.

The guy is a veteren and will do all the little veteren things.  If he hits .260 he will end up with a better OBP than Estrada just becuase he runs things out as opposed to refusing to run period.  He wont clog the basepaths and he is a smart situational hitter.  As mentioned before, as long as he can keep calling games like he has the first week, this staff is better,  and the bullpen will be better. Couple that with a much improved defense, and he looks like a bargain.

Forget for a minute the fact that he's hitting .467 with 5 runs and 4 RBI's from the 9-hole(!!).  Kendall is new to just about every pitcher on this staff, including the very young Parra and Villanueva and this team's current ERA is 3.17.  And if we could (we can't) take away Gagne's horrible inning the team ERA would be 2.66.  That includes a 2.87 ERA for the 5 starters and they have combined for an average start of 6.2 innings.  That's sounds like just a bunch of random numbers, but Kendall, so far, is exactly what he was brought in for behind the plate and so much more than was expected with the lumber.

As far as I'm concerned, anything that he gives us from the plate is a bonus.  His job in my eyes is to call solid ball games.  He is so far ahead of Estrada in this capacity that it makes this an entirely different team.  The other thing that I love about him that I hated about Estrada is the hustle.  That was personified in the play yesterday that he reached on an error on.  It was an error but it was partly caused by hustle.  If this was last year, Estrada would have still been standing in the batters box when that throw went awry.  IMO this is the greatest signing Melvin has ever made.
