Just wanted to see what you guys think. I think it's absurd that the Houston fans boo Albert Pujols every time he comes to bat just because of that bomb he hit against Lidge in the 2005 NLCS. Respect the guy for being a stud, but don't boo him. Seems a little childish to me.

I was waiting for someone to post about this topic. How do you boo a guy who has done nothing but good for baseball? You never hear a bad word from him or about him. His teammates and the rest of the MLB players always talk good about him. I totally agree with you tomahawk, pretty classes by the Astros fans just because Pujols hit bomb off of Lidge that is probably still going.

I was in Houston last night for the game.
For the most part, most of their fans are lacking class! They heckled any and all Cardinals fans before, during, and after. I was cussed at more than a few times, and whatever, i can take it. What annoys me is when i'm being told F the Cardinals while there is a 7 or 8 year old there to witness it. Luckily for them, i'm not speaking of my 7 or 8 year old, or the loud mouth would quickly find out what a F-ing fist tasted like.
As for the booing of El hombre, well, it's a sign of fear and respect! Boo long and hard 'stros fans!
And for the stadium atmosphere, i grade it at an F! I thought i was at a NBA game or a night club. No organ music, no baseball music, just generated beats and techno. It sucked!
The only good thing about it, the roof was open for the game.

The first and only game I have seen at the new park in Houston, I got the exact same treatment. This was before the Pujols bomb, and still the fans were very rude. I as well caught the F bomb from several of their fans. I just am happy to be a part of a true fan base that appreciates good baseball. Didn't we give Biggio a standing o at the final game last year. I was there and I stood along with everyone else and applauded him, his, career, and all of his accomplishments. How many times in his career did he do damage to Cardinal pitching? Bottom line is they are classless and bitter!!

Let's win this one tonight to take 2 of 3 and keep them at the basement of the Central.

It wouldn't surprise me if they closed the roof for tonight's game. They always seem to do that against the Cards even when it is nice weather there just to them that extra edge by making it louder. I am glad that they no longer will be able to play that stupid buzzing sound for the Killer B's since Berkman is the only one left of them.

I remember a couple years ago a division rival hit a career milestone HR (I'm pretty sure it was when Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 500th career HR) it was at St. Louis. Cardinal Nation gave him a standing O as he was rounding the bases! If he had hit it in Houston, he probably would have been booed!
I know the traditional rivalry is with the Cubs, but I get just as much satisfaction from a "big red 'W'" over the Stros as anybody, and I HATE to lose to them.

I agree with you on that. I think the 2 years when the Cards and Astros met in the playoffs that made me enjoy that rivalry as much as the Cubs rivalry. I do have more respect the Cubs fans just cause they are as passionate about there team as we are about ours. You go to a Cubs vs Cards game and it is fun to be at and you can talk trash about each others team but then leave with a congrats and a hand shake. Now the Astros fans just think they are better than everyone else and don't even want to have a conversation with you.

Actually, if you talk to the great hitters of the game, they say it is a sign of respect that you are booed in other teams ballparks because of what you have done in the past against that team. Pujols feels the same way and is always happy to oblige with a killing blow like in the playoffs those two years. Its not as much classless as it is respect for a great player.

I can see that to some extent, but you don't see Cardinal fans booing Lance Berkman, even though he always wears the Cards out.
A boo is never a sign of respect in and of itself, although there is an underlying message that says "great player".
If you go to a game at Busch Stadium, it would not be a big suprise to hear the Cards' fans cheer an opposing player making a spectacular defensive play. How many times has that happened at Minute Maid Park?

tomahawk hog,
Great topic and great post!!! Here is my 2 cents worth. I would like for an Astros fan to name me one single time he has ever cheated against them and how he done it. The truth is they can't. I might could see fans boo a player for cheating against their team. But Sir Albert is a very fair and a bona fide gamer. Sir Albert is hands down the best thing to happen to MLB this decade and for many more to come. Oh yes, very well past his playing days. Sir Albert has been a bona fide God Send since players such as Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds still continue to cast a dark shadow over MLB. Sir Albert has tremendously helped brighten the light at the end of the tunnel of all this steroid and HGH mess. Sir Albert reminds me of the way the game used to be played back in the 1950's and 1960's.
To boo him just for helping his own team 2 years ago in the post season is rude, rediculous, obsurd and down right classless. There is absolutely nothing good in booing a player. Like one of you gentlemen said in your post the Cards fans stood and gave retiring Craig Biggio an ovation in his final game at Busch Stadium. How would Astros fans like it if instead of the standing ovation that Biggio deserved the Cards fans booed him???
My guess is they most likely would have given a care less. The Cards fans on the other hand have true compassion and are full of class. Makes me proud to be a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. 68

I remember that moment when Griffey hit number 500 with his dad in the stands. It was truly a great BASEBALL moment. Cardinals fans didn't care that it was an opposing player. I got chills watching him circle the bases and the entire stadium stand up and applaud.

They've been booing Pujols before the Lidge HR. I go to Cards-Stros games all the time, and for the most part, I would agree that they are amoungst the least knowledgeable fans in the National League. I have talked to a few very fair and knowledgeable fans at these games but as a whole, their class as a fan base at home games is pretty low, especially in the playoffs, when the fans who dont really understand whats happening show up to fill the seats.

When people get to a game atmosphere they just lose their minds. You very rarely see that kind of behavior outside the ballpark. Mike and Mike were talking about this the other day. There's a difference between a little trash talk or booing and dropping F bombs. Very Classless!!

If you wear your gear to another teams ballpark, expect boos! If you hit damaging homeruns against a team in the playoffs, expect boos at their park! I am OK with all of that, the boos mean you have crushed them in the past!
What I'm not OK with are the F-Bombs, and especially in front of the kids! Can't tollerate that!
Cards fans are different, and definately more knowledgeable than the average fan! Very respectful fans, makes me proud to wear the red!

A few years back, when Peter Angelos was solely in command of the Orioles, the folks at Camden Yards made heckling opposing players or fans an ejectable offense. I thought this was outrageous. Half the fun--at least--of going to opponents' ballparks is being a lightning rod. Otherwise, what's the point of going? Seriously, if you went to Wrigley Field in an Albert Pujols jersey, and no one paid any more attention to you than if you were walking to the post office, wouldn't you be disappointed? I live near Baton Rouge, and am not like 104% of the people around me, in that I do not worship LSU Athletics. So when I went to the LSU-Tulane game decked out in Tulane garb, I made a point to walk by the heart of LSU pre-game tailgating..dom. If you get it, relish it. If you don't expect it, I can't help you. I fully agree that cursing in front of kids often makes me want to kick people's teeth in, but beyond that, every team' | |
