Who wins in a battle of the two Giants, Gholston or Long? If you're looking for a guy to fill a hole and be better than average his whole career then go with Long. However, if you're looking for the next BIG thing then look no further than the freak of an athlete, Vernon Gholston. The guy literally looks like an action figure with ridiculously large arms who just so happened to jump over 40" and run a sub 4.6 40 time!!! Not to mention, this guy didn't even start playing the game of football until his sophmore year of high school. At 6-3, 265 this specimen has the ability to either stay at the size he is now and be a force to be reckoned with as pass rushing OLB... however, he has the frame to gain another 20-25 lbs and be one of the most feared DE in the NFL.... or you could just stay with your "safe", boring pick of Chris Long. What would you do?

Chris Long is good but the every number other then nepotism says Vernon Gholston is the better DE. Nothing wrong with nepotism considering Long's father is a Hall of Fame performer on the field and dominated at both DT and DE for the Oakland Raiders in 4-3 and 3-4 defenses.
Both have great upsides but I would have to go with Gholston due to physical talent.

The names Mike Mamula and Aundray Bruce come to mind when I read about Gholston's meteoric rise in draft stock. Does Gholston have the college production to back up his physical ability? Or is this a case of a dude possessing mad physical ability but little real football skills?
If I'm drafting in the top five this year, I need someone I KNOW will produce right away, which lead to either of the Longs, or maybe Sedrick Ellis. These are guys with a track record, and less of a health history than Dorsey from LSU. Miami and Atlanta have a little more latitude to go after Gholston because they just cleaned house in terms of coaching and management. But St. Louis CANNOT screw up this draft because will probably get canned if the Rams are horrible again in '08.

Chris Long he dominates his side of the Line be it Pass or Run. If you want a situational pass rusher thenGhulston is your man. If you want somebody who can get to the QB relaibily and is asset not a weakness in the run game then Chris Long is your man. Me I would take Chris Long in a Heart beat over Gulston every time. He is a true everydown player who is NFL ready, to say he has no upside and is as good as he will ever get is just what sportswriters trying to find something bad about him say because they really cant find a big hole in his game. Is he the fastest no is he strongest no most athletic no. Is he the best available at his spot for sure.

an obvious homer pick by an Ohio State fan.... I'll stay with your so-called "safe, boring pick" and stick with Long here. I do like Gholston too, don't get me wrong, but not at number one.

Chris Long is the knowledgeable choice, however, consider if you need a DE or a guy that can play both DE & LB.

Just go to youtube and type in chris long look at his clips specifically the one called the safety. you will see why he is rated so hi. I saw him play against Virginia Tech n person, He got two sacks and about 4 or 5 tackleswhile he had strep throught or was just getting over it anways. VT ran every play in the opposite direction than him every play. He dominated the game and almost brought UVA back into the game al by himself. Unfortunatly He cant control the other side of the ball as well. Believe me he is force to be reckoned with. He has the brains the motor the heart the talant the leadership that you want he palys the run and pass equally well. So do think there s a reason why they say he is a finished product and he is the safer pick. Duhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! If you think Ghulston is a better pick you must be a Ohio fan because no one else on this earth thinks hes better. Gholston will be another Burgess wich is ood thing to have Long will be another Vrabel I hink I would take Vrabel type first. Its possible that he might even be better than his father.

I am going to be honest, I didn't really see too much of Chris Long (made a point to watch 2 of his games), but being a Michigan fan I saw a LOT of Gholston. I hate to say it, but Gholston is legit. The man can get off the ball like no other. All of the people around the deuce I talked to have said that he is what LaMarr Woodley would have been had he been an athletic monster (like Gholston is). The one thing I really like about Long is the 20 pounds he has on Vernon. I don't know if its just me, since the measurables are pretty close, but Long looks a lot bigger to me than Gholston, but Gholston is just a freak of an athlete, reminds me of Jevon Kerse coming out of college. Again, I will repeat, I probably saw Long play 3 games in his college career, while seeing Gholston play about 20, but my goodness if Mario Williams was able to go before Reggis Bush and Vince Young, I feel like Gholston should be able to go before Chris Long. Gholston played like a monster against the alledged number 1 pick in Jake Long. In Jake's defense, 2 of the 3 sacks Vernon had were coverage sacks, but he still had a tackle for loss and a legitimate sack on Henne and thats a LOT more than most can say they got on Long.
Hell, this has become a ramble with no real goal or objective in the writing. Just know a diehard Michigan fan and alum would take Gholston over Long, the guy can be a big time playmaker and is already coming into the league as one of the most athletic linemen in the league.

talib is shit and cant play, so if any team drafts him in round 1 its a reach. and new england does not take sedrick ellis. although he is the best player available, the pats have a good d-line already and have invested too much money into it. there is no way we can pay a guy like ellis the money a #7 overall pick deserves. unless NE switches to a 4-3, which is highly unlikely, ellis will not be taken by the pats. a more probable pick is kieth rivers

I went to school with Goldston and he didnt play much football but he was always a big freakish looking player. Ohio State really helped him develop and trust me, we havent seen the half of what he can do. He has a shit load of potential because in high school he didnt have good coaching and once he did in college it started to show. He will be better than he is now in about 2 more yrs and then watch out. Long is okay but Im justing judging from highlights. I never seen him play and I personally believe the hype is coming from who his dad is. He is good but I dont see him being another Aaron Kaphman. He has been playing football way longer than Goldston. He is worth a top 20 pick but not top overall pick. Is he really that much better that Derrick Harvey or Calais Campbell (who was a beast his sophmore yr)? The players in this draft with the most potential in order are
1. Vernon Goldston
2. Dominique Cromartie
3. Rashard Mendenhall
4. Keith Rivers
5. Darren McFadden
These are players I feel will exceed there expectations far more than anyone else. Mendenhall is higher that McFadden because people expect a lot more out of him.
This isnt my top 5 players however;
Jake Long, Vernon Goldston, Glenn Dorsey, Darren McFadden, Sedrick Ellis
There will be a lots of pro bowlers out of this class one day!
WR: Manningham, Jackson(as a return man), maybe Thomas
RB: Stewart if healthy, Mendenhall, McFadden
QB: Brohm, Henne
LB: Mayo, Rivers, Shawn Crable (dont sleep on him)
S: none
CB: Cromartie, McClevin, Talib, maybe Justin King
DE: Campbell, Goldston, Harvey, maybe Long
DT: Dorsey, Ellis
OT: Otah, Long, Clady
G: Albert
