Now I been looking at some of these threads and the high scoring NBA games.  People have been talking about teams that play no defense and have other teams scoring many points on them.  Now the Chicago Bulls Scored 151 points Monday April 14 while shooting 67% from the field.  While their opponent the Milwaukie Bucks scored 135 points while shooting 57% from the field.  So I figure that if you can score that many points in a 48 minute game then who needs defense.  What do you all think about this.

Which would you rather have your team play if you were coaching an NBA Team?

I think you can put pressure on teams when your scoring is just crazy.  I think that if you can put effort in on offense then the defense will just come.

That philsophy is okay but look at the teams who score the most.  You have Golden State, Denver, Phoenix, and Washington for that matter.  Those teams have not accomplished anything.  Look at who has won the NBA Titles.  Tim Duncan (Defense) and SanAntonio.  Ben Wallace with the Detroit Pistons.  Shaq with the Heat.  You just have to realize how bad of a defensive team the Milwaukee Bucks are for the Bulls to put up 151. They are very lousy.  The Bulls defense isn't very good either.  With Ben Wallace gone, they go from giving up 93/game last year and 97/game this year with him here, to about giving up 103 points/game.  Not too good.  Deng constantly gets burned on the backside. Hinrich hasn't played as nearly as good as last year.  I don't see BG coming back next season.  Aaron Gray is lousy and slower than a turtle, and Drew Gooden isn't known for his defense.  The Spurs have proven that you can win with a good offense and a great defense, but I have not seen a team win with a great offense and mediocre defense.  Everybody always talks about the Suns and the Mavs, but they can't stop anybody. That's why they haven't won a NBA title.  That is point of assembling a team, is to win a championship. Obviously Phoenix went away from their style in trading high flying Shawn Marion for Low-post defense and rebounding in Shaquille O'Neal. A move that just might pay off.  Dallas tweaked their roster and brought in one of the best playmakers and a terrific leader and defender in the aging Jason Kidd. Atleast they made an effort to improve.  The Warriors didn't even make the playoffs. The Nuggetts barely made the playoffs and they have two of the top scorers in the NBA. Could Boston win the NBA Title. Yes because they traded for Kevin Garnett. His defense and leadership is what will get them there. Are offensive minded clubs scary-yes they can be but I'll take the Spurs, Celtics, or Pistons over the Wizards, Warriors and Nuggets.

I chose "good defense fair offense" and here's why: defense wins championships. As Crazedrat pointed out above, recent NBA teams that have employed the strategy you're advocating (i.e. Great offense, no defense) have been fairly successful during the regular season but have lost in the playoffs. Phoenix, before the Shaq era, had a "run and gun" offense with little to no defense to speak of and what did they accomplish with that gameplan? They made the playoffs several years in a row but never won it all. Instead, the defensive powerhouses, otherwise known as the San Antonio Spurs, LA Lakers and the Detroit Pistons, won the Finals again and again. On a similar note, Michael Jordan and the 1990s Bulls were prolific offensive teams (how could they not be with MJ on their team), but they were also the best defensive team in the league nearly every one of those championship seasons. Scottie Pippen was first team all defense virtually every season for basically the entire decade, and Horace Grant and Dennis Rodman were among the league's top rebounders every year. Remember, rebounding is a defensive statistic.

I'm not saying that good offense isn't exciting to watch or that it's unimportant, but what I am saying is that good defense is an absolute necessity for championship teams. I like making the playoffs, but I won't be satisfied as a Bulls fan until they win it all, and that's my mentality year in and year out.
