"8 million is a discounted rate?  HAHAHA - thats fabulous!"

Yes it is, its sad that is the state of baseball now a days but 8 million for one season of a future hall of fame pitcher.  That is very much a discounted rate.  I actually thought it was more.

  1. Tim Hudson. Qut hating. our ace Hudson, unlike santana, HAS a winning record in 2008. Which Braves fan ever said Hudson is 'home grown' talent is a bit mistaken. granted he's from Columbus, but he wasn't brought up through the farm system.
  2. John Smoltz has never pitched a major league game in any other uniform, so therefore he is home grown talent. Smoltzie was scouted and drafted by Detroit, but he never pitched a game in a detroit Tigers uniform. Thus, saying John Smoltz isn't home grown talent is just plain ignorant.

Um, no. Homegrown talent is when you draft, rear in the minors, and ultimately plug into your major league club. Not when you trade Doyle Alexander to another to the Tigers for a nearly major league ready pitcher. Smoltz was not home grown by Atlanta. Whether or not he pitched a game for them is irrelevant. He came via trade, end of story. So to say Smoltz is home-grown is whats ignorant.

Nearly major league ready pitcher is an overstatement.  The Braves traded for a AA pitcher that was 4-10 with a 5.68 ERA.  Everybody wants to bring those numbers into the majors right.

Well the Braves did...

The Braves got him in  August of 1987 and in July of 1988 he made his ML debut. Less than one year later. So yes, thats "nearly" ML ready like I said.

Its just ridiculous that people referred to my comment as "ignorant" while at the same time not knowing this, or blatantly ignoring it.

Not every player that comes to the majors is major league ready.  That Brian Bocock, SS for the Giants, was certainly not ready for the majors.  He had only played A ball and was not impressive.  I never posted your comment was "ignorant."  I just simply posted that it was an overstatement to say Smoltz was nearly ready.
