This may sound weird but it's on my mind so I thought I'd throw it out there.
I don't think I want our beloved Saints to be a dynasty team like the Patriots, the 49ers, the Cowboys, the Bulls, oops... football, focus...
I'd love to win a few Super Bowls. Maybe even back to back would be neat, but then a few years off, then another win, then a few years off etc... You know, 1 or 2 rings every 10 years is cool.
When you hit that dynasty mark, there's only 2 ways to go and only 1 is possible. You can keep winning 3 out of 4 Superbowls (not possible) or you can stop winning 3 of 4 Superbowls, so basically you become a team that's middle of the road or worse.
Patriots - Some day Brady will retire & Belecheat will be outta' there = average team
Cowboys - Owner gets his hands into everything and coaches hate that = good team, no more rings.
49ers - Everybody figured out the "West Coast Offense" gimmic = average team.
All the dynasty teams go away and let's face it, (A) what do you have to look forward too? (B) I don't want our team to go away!
I love thinking "this could be the year" every year, and some day, my prayers will be answered (I think).
I've enjoyed watching our first playoff win with Haslett, our second win with Payton and am eager for another few wins and a chance at a ring.
I may sound looney, but that may be appropriate.
Love to hear what you think.

I like your thinking. But when a team starts off as average, has its golden years, then ends up average, what's the problem? You're spot on when it comes "those who rise will eventually fall," but as long as a franchise doesnt absolutely implode, its still great to have those golden years. As far as our team "not going away" have we really been anywhere? Were just now putting that "s" onto Saints.

Wow, I couldn't respectfully disagree more. The dynasties of the NFL have become part of their legend. The Patriots(no matter what you personally think of them) will always be considered one of the best teams in the league. I would love for the Saints to be a dynasty one day, because I want them to be in the conversation among the greats.
You say, "All the dynasty teams go away"--but what team doesn't? I think the legacy of a dynasty is far more enduring than a one year wonder (exception-'85 Bears). The Patriots were considered a dynasty after their third superbowl win. Since then they have been in the running every year. Brady is only 30 years old and Moss is resigned for three years. They can conceivably win 2 or 3 more titles. My point is that it is possible to have a dynasty and structure your organization to compete every year. That's the key--no team is going to win every year, but good teams know how to compete every year. (This is why I can't stand Cowboys fans--their sense of entitlement is nauseating).
Dynasties are special and rare and for fans a great thing to hope for. The Saints aren't a dynasty and may never be, but they seem to be on the road of consistent competitive football. That is something to be proud of.

Mid Iowa, I to would personally rather have a dynasty! I want our Saints to mentioned as one of if not the greatest team of all time. I realize we have a long way to go, but what else do we have to do.

So, a Superbowl win every 5 years or so wouldn't make our team (or franchise) one of the greatest ever? Even 3 in a decade with a few more later on to boot?
Don't get me wrong guys, I love the winning aspect. It would be great to see it happen all the time. I wish it were my team at 18-0 going into the Superbowl. I wish we were in the race for the first team to 6 Lombardi trophies.
I don't want to be a 3 in 4 years and then not get there for 15 or 20 years with nothing in sight... that's all.
After re-reading my thread I can see why it sounds like I don't want to be a dynasty period. I guess what I'm saying is I don't want to follow in the footsteps of the past dynasties with the exception of the Steelers possibly because they continue to threaten no matter what, but they too took a long time off.

Once you get that taste of winning Superbowls -- I gurantee your mindframe will change and you are going to EXPECT to win instead of Dreaming of wins.
I'd Love to see a Saints Dynasty... I mean we are having so much fun with this LSU dynasty why not?

I have to think that FREE AGENCY and THE SALARY CAP, has changed the term dynasty. All great teams came together for a few years as all of those you talked about because of a core group of superstars, when the superstars got older the teams could not keep their role players to compliment their core group. Right now the Patriots seem like they have kept enough of those players, so they are a true dynasty, as long as that core group keep playing. I personally think THE NEW ORLEANS Saints are only a couple or three players being in that situation.
