Heard that all April last year
followed by It's only May, it's only June, it's only July........etc, etc, etc
i am very encouraged by the early returns on the Sox this year
14-7 with Ortiz hitting below .200, Lester and Buchholz being inconsistent, the bullpen being up and down, Lowell being out and unproductive when he was healthy
Yankees are the yankees, you can never count them out, but I just think they will be a lot better in 2009 than they will be in 2008.......honestly, that team is going to be scary good for a long time once the young guys get some more experience
Blue Jays cant be discounted either, they have the best starting rotation in the A.L. East top to bottom, easily, maybe in the A.L.
yeah, it may be only april, but the A.L. East division in 2007 was won in April and May

How many games out were the Yankees after April and May last season? I don't know where to get that info. But I would assume it was more than 3.5 games unless the Red Sox started off much slower than I remember.
Every game counts, but April doesn't show what type of team you have. ie: Yankees are not a .500 team.

nasty has a great web site for that info, nyy, but I dont remember it
i believe the yanks were out 14 or so games by the end of may
the Sox have about the same record right now as they did last year, the yanks have a better record than this time last year
my point is that a division can be won in the first couple months
Sox did it last year, the Tigers of 84 started off 35-5 and coasted from there

ESPN.com. Go to the standings and then click on 2007 and it will give you the standings on this date last year. I think it was 3 games at this point. I think this year is very different from last year. Last year we didn't know where the pitching was going to come from and just started calling up prospects early. This year we know where the pitching will come from, they just have to start performing the way they're able

It can be, that's true. But if the Yankees stay close, which they are, they have been the best second half team in baseball the past few seasons. Last year they were easily the best second half team, and I'm pretty sure we were in 2006 and wasn't it 2005 that we started 11-18 and won the division? I always mix up seasons but I am just saying that if they are within striking distance in July, they are very dangerous.
All you need to do is look at last season to see how quickly division leads can dwindle.
With that said, I would definitely prefer if we didn't fall behind in the standings, just makes for a huge, uphill battle that will be tough with the Red Sox being a good team.

I have to say the Red Sox are the team to beat this year, just like last year. When a team can win without their best players performing at their best, that is always good. Even when their pitching is off, Boston's lineup is too stacked not to keep the Sox in the game.
I wish the Tigers had that.

"Heard that all April last year"
You're right. The Sox are up 3 games on April 21, Yanks should just give up. The division can be won early.
Of course, on April 21, 2006 the Sox were up 3 games on the Yankees. I guess the Sox should just concede 2nd place to Toronto.

"When a team can win without their best players performing at their best, that is always good."
The Sox have 6 regulars who are each hitting between 20 and 80 points above their career averages. That's how you win when 1 guy is hitting poorly. Probably isn't going to last all 162 games.
by the way, they're averaging fewer runs per game now then they did last season. It's april.

in October of 2004, nyy1, the yanks were up 3 games on the Sox in the ALCS
i guess the Sox should have just conceded
there.........now I just made a completely irrelevant point in this thread to match yours

actually, you had made a completely irrelevant point to start the thread, if you're that concerned with counting.

lol nyy1
i said the 2007 AL East division was won in April and May, and it was
I said "its only april" in the sense that I heard that all last year in here, and it meant nothing then, as it worked out
or maybe the irrelevant point you think I made is about the Yankees being better in 2009 than they will be in 2008.........that is up for debate
but leave it to you to twist a thread away from what it was about
h to the ater

i am very encouraged by the early returns on the Sox this year
Drew's hitting 38 points higher than last year at this time and has 13 rbi's. He ended the month of May with a total of 17 last year. Lugo's hitting. (and actually, Drew and Lugo's struggles were at the worst in May last year) Pedroia's hitting .337 compared to .182 a year ago. Beckett has come back quicker than I thought he would. DiceK, i still believe, won't be taking a step bac this year as our fav ny dj here would have you believe. Youkilis is hot. (that was for you on many levels SexCareProvider) Casey has been the professional hitter he's supposed to be in his expanded role. Very encouraged indeed, RSG. They got heart and soul, that i'm certain of.
