Maybe some of you all can tell me some reason why a college player that wants to get in the NFL doesn't go to a bigger program.   Seems to me that whether it was academics or money that would have been overcome for someone with talent.  I think it's because they want to be the big fish in the little pond and not have the higher competition level.  What do you think?

Sometimes the big programs just plain miss on a player.  Heck, OU, OSU & Tulsa missed on Wes Welker (from Okla. City, OK).  I know he still went to Texas Tech, (would have been Super Bowl MVP if NE won) but they missed this guy in their own back yard! The NFL scouts know to search all over the place.  Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK  (NAIA school) has had 2 players go to the Dallas Cowboys and make the roster and play significantly.  (Lynn Scott  a few years ago and currently some receiver named Patrick Crayton who happens to be one of their best players on offense.)  The cream will rise to the top and those players will be found no matter where they play their college football.   Hollywood Henderson played @ Langston Oklahoma another NAIA School and he had a nice career with the Cowboys. So it all really boils down to whether or not you got game.

I don't think many top level guys think that way.  For the most part these guys were just overlooked.  If you are offered to walk on at a mid level division I school or offered a scholarship at I-AA what would you do.  Some guys are late bloomers who never dreamed they would get as good as they do.  In Texas theres about 50 scouts at a top 5-A high school game and 2 at 3-A and lower.  Alot of those guys go the top non bcs schools or I-AA.  In the 80's I knew a kid who was offered to walk on at Ga., offered a scholarship to Kentucky and Ga. Southern who was a Div I-aa power at the time.  He chose Ga. Southern over UK (who sucked at the time) because the enthusiasm at Ga. Southern made it feel more big time than the apathy at UK.  There are no division schools in some regions and alot of guys just want to stay close to home.  Stephen F. Austin in east Texas has no Divsion I competetion really close and they get alot of East Texas boys who choose to stay close to home.

Thats like asking a dumb kid who wants to be a doctor why s/he doesn't just go to Johns Hopkins or Harvard.  It ain't an option.

These big time programs take the best players at that time.  What good would it be to give a scholarship to a kid who will be great 4 years in the future.  For a college program,...NONE.  This is not like MLB where you can take a HS kid with potential and let him develop in the minors.  Big time college football programs can't look more than 2, 3 years MAX into the future with their blue-chippers, and at Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, etc., they only deal with blue-chippers.  MANY of the top recruits are as good as they are ever going to be at 19-20 years old.

Wes Welker was a great college player.  At the beginning of his NFL career, he wasn't that good.  Wasn't that good of a receiver (slot guy or otherwise).  He was a decent returner but he didn't become a great NFL player (read: best hot read this league has seen in a decade) receiving option 'till recently.  It's plain and simple.  Kids don't develop athletically at the same pace across the board.  NFL guys don't either.

Carry on.

Good answers all.  I appreciate your insight as I never quite looked at it that way.

alley-gator,

another reason, as was my case, is that your eligibility clock starts for division I as soon as you start your first full-time semester, regardless of whether you attend a school that even has a football team.

that being the case for me, i burned 3 years of eligibility going to junior college part-time and full-time, while also working.  that left me with two years of eligibility at a division I school, or four full years of eligibility at a I-AA, division II, or division III school.  its not always as simple as going straight to a BCS school from high school.

I'm sure for some of these guys a guaranteed starting role is enticing.  Some of these division II guys may not have as much potential as some division I benchwarmers but they are way better football players cause they've been on the field for 4 years.

In the case of a school like Stanford, you have a spot on a football team that does get attention from the NFL and if that doesn't work out then you have an education that will take you where ever you want to go.  Win/win.

because if you happen to not be a standout like Anquain Boldin its difficult to convince a 1a school to give you a full ride if you have subpar grades. Many of these players have 1a talent which should be more clear to everyone this year after app st. and then look at nfl players such as Rashean Mathis  who are stars despite coming from a small school.

"Seems to me that whether it was academics"

Thats laughable. These players cant get into a BCS school because of academics!

You need a reality check sir.
