with the #s that he put up and leadership which he possesses is too valuable to pass up. this kid has the potential to be a high draft (though he prob wont be) so i think hes gotta be drafted or signed and given a chance cause he has alot of talent

I think Colt Brennan can be accurately compared to Ty Detmer as far as a NFL Prospect. He put up HUGE numbers in college and will be an above average back up in the NFL, he can finish games for you and maybe go .500 in a few spot starts. He is NOT starter material, as many of the teams that tried that with Detmer found out.

I think he would be a great choice for Green Bay because he wouldn't have the pressure of having to start but could see some playing time due to Rodgers brief history of injuries in the few games he has played.

I think Brennen will end up with a nice career as a back up in the NFL.  He could have a Tom Brady sort of story though (no, I don't think he is as good as Tom Brady).  He might get the chance to spell some starter and never look back.

His stock has dropped so far for four reasons that I can see.  He played for Hawaii.  Georgia made him look bad.  He didn't look good at the Sr. bowl becase of a sore hip, which leads to the last reason, he just had hip surgery.

If a team like San Fransisco ends up with Brennen in camp, he will have a good chance to win that starter job.  Alex Smith will miss some time, and Brennen could show better than Smith.

It's been beat to death, but his mechanics are absolutely horrible.  Add to that a weak arm and average footwork and you have Gino Torreta.  There is an outside shot he doesn't get drafted, especially when you look at guys like Booty and Woodson probably as 2nd day picks, both of whom have much higher pro potential than Brennan.

I can't believe this thread has made two pages. I believe it is obvious Colt is no where near a first rounder.

He's got heart?  did you honestly make that a part of your arguement?  Heart is just an overcompensated term for "would you like fries with that".  Colt does not have the components to be put in any NFL system, just look at his NCAA TD predescessor Detmer....furthermore he only played one team his entire senior season with a halfway decent defense (Georgia) and they blitz the snot out of him, and he couldnt handle the speed.  Which is exactly what the NFL is..Speed.  So if your ever in a McDonalds and see someone who looks like colt...well...it probably is.

Mark MY words, Colt Brennan will do nothing.  Timmy Chang put up huge numbers in Hawaii and did nothing in the NFL.  Guys like David Klingler snf Andre Ware put up big numbers in a pass happy offense against bad competion and look waht they did... nothing.  Same goes for Ty Detmer, great college career, and while he did play some, he was never a force in the NFL... neither will Colt Brennan.

as a niners fan i take offense, Alex Smith has been craptacular so far, but to his defense his o-line has been flooded with injuries so there was never any consistancy as to who was playing.  mike martz made two guys who were never drafted look like good qb's (warner and kitna).  he might be able to do it for smith or even Shaun Hill, but they will not take brennan!  plus they brought in O'Sullivan to be the 3rd qb, because he has played under martz already.  they have more glaring needs like WR, Ol, DL, and some depth at LB.  if they take brennan the GM and nolan should be fired!

I really like this kid, he is a stud...his line was not fast enough to protect him in the sugar bowl or did his coaches do anything to protect him....i hope he gets a chance some where...i think 49ers, Lions, Vikings, or even the Rams....the rams are prob the best fit because he can get some playing time but learn from a vet in bulger.

bcon-  Sorry to offend.  I actually pull for Alex Smith to have a good NFL career.  I have lots of family in SLC and some inlaws are U grads so his college career was sort of forced on me.  I grew to like the guy.  I could have picked a number of teams for my comments.  Falcons, Texans, Ravens, Bills, Jets, Dolphins.  Any team that is questioning their quarterback.

For the record, I don't expent Brennen to be in Niners camp either.

I'm not a Hawaii guy (Boise State fan, actually), but I think it would be foolish of a team to not take a flier on Brennan if he's available later in the draft.  He just had too much production to not use a late round pick on him.  One thing that always cracks me up is when people (usually SEC fans, but not always) bash the WAC for their terrible teams and schedules.  That's the same argument used by Oklahoma fans before Boise State beat them in the Fiesta Bowl.  And if the big time conferences are so good, why wont any of them do a home and home with Boise State or Fresno State?  Fear, you say?  I would agree.  No one wants to play BSU on the blue turf.  No one wants to play Fresno State.  They have a record of knocking off BSC schools.  They almost upset USC in USC a couple years ago.  Anyway, threadjack over.

Back to the main point.  Brennan may or may not pan out to be an NFL starting qb, and I certainly wouldnt risk a first rounder on him for some of the reasons mentioned earlier, but if my team utilized the west coast offense I wouldnt have a problem with them using a late round pick o the guy.  Maybe Washington would be a good fit.  They are transitioning to the West Coast Offense under Jim Zorn, have an established #1 guy in Jason Campbell and a solid back up in Todd Collins there would be no pressure for Brennan to play.  He could learn the system, improve his mechanics and adapt to NFL speed.  And if he doesnt pan out, you didnt waste a valuable pick on the guy.

I dont put a ton of stock in "measureables."  The combine is a joke.  Can a guy play or not?  Terrel Suggs dropped in the draft because scouts were scared off by his slow 40 time.  Didnt matter that he killed the Pac-10 when he played for ASU.  He got drafted by Baltimore and is a stud for them.  Mike Mamula had a great combine and shot up the draft boards.  The Eagles took him 7th overall.  Where's Mamula now?  Good question, but I know he's not i nthe NFL.  The moral here is guys play 4 years worth of games and scouts (and fans) are quick to toss out their collective body of work due to one 40 yard sprint or a set of bench press reps.  The game is played onthe field, not on the track or in the weight room.  Some scoffed at the heart of Colt Brennan.  I dont.  Heart is an immessurable, an intangible.  He played well on the field.  I say give him a shot.

Just because brennan is a good passer, does not make him a good NFL QB...he doesnt have the foot work to elude the blitz...and you can bet those NFL blitzs are going to be coming a lot quicker than Georgia's....rams didnt draft anyone elite for O Line, and in time Pace will retire, and than the Rams have jack...so in time the line will prolly get worse.
