Lets start with Isringhausen.

The last 4 out of 7 appearances he has given up at least a run.  In three of those appearances it was multiple runs.
Total of 8 runs and 10 hits.  ouch.

Starting to remind me of the Izzy of old.

Now Mr. Ankiel.

Out of the past 8 times he has had a runner at third with less than two outs, only ONCE has he been able to bat that run in.  No dice.
Also, in his past 7 games he has totaled 4 hits in 29 a bats.
And to further add insult to injury, it has been 10 games without a homer and 9 without an rbi.

wow.

I am not ready to write these guys off yet.  But Tony LaRUssa really needs to give some OF's who can hit more playing time right now.  The closer situation I am at a loss for words... I have no solution there.

Thoughts?

mmhmmbc,

For starters, I think TLR needs to temporarily move Izzy from the closers role to a situational relief role or maybe a setup role and start using Anthony Reyes as the closer until Izzy regains his confidence. Second, as for Ankiel, the best thing to do here is to keep putting him in the starting lineup everyday and let him work his way out of his "slump". That's the only way he will overcome this dry spell. We have to keep our confidence in him or else he may very well go into a bona fide slump - and heaven forbid that.

I do understand why TLR keeps going to Izzy. He doesn't want to tarnish what minor confidence Izzy has in himself. But the more blown saves and losses he keeps allowing Izzy to rack up the longer it will take for Izzy to regain all of his confidence and right now we can ill afford that. There, to me, would be a better chance of Izzy regaining his confidence if TLR would, for the time being, use Izzy as a situational reliever and allow Reyes the chance to get some saves. TLR needs to step up and do what's right for the team, then then the player. We can ill afford to fall too far behind the Cubs and the Brewers are only a half game behind us in 3rd place. And you can't ignore the Astros either. They are only 2 games behind us in 4th place (1 game behind the Brew Crew). I am just merely stressing how important it is to get these two guys going in the right direction now - not later.

Just my thoughts.    GO CARDS!!!!     68

that was a big loss this early in the season a game that you had then blew it. could have pulled Cardinals within a half of a game.

They are both very frustrating to watch right now.  I think Ankiel will be able to play through this.  As mentioned in another thread, he is a very streaky hitter, kind of like Jim Edmonds was during his time here.  Ankiel opened the year hot and now has cooled off.  Having said that, I was at the game last night and in the bottom of the 9th with Ryan on 3rd and one out, Ankiel has to do one of two things.  He either needs to be able to hit a reasonably deep fly ball to allow Ryan to tag up or he needs to put the ball on the ground to the 1B side to give Ryan a decent chance of scoring.  These are 2 basic abilities that a major league hitter must do when the situation comes up.

Izzy is another story.  He has not looked right all season in my opinion.  Kind of like before he had that surgery on his hip or whatever it was.  He is up in the strike zone way too often and his velocity is generally in the upper 80's range which is not good enough.  Like I said, these were the same issues he had before he had surgery and I'm wondering if the same issue has come up.  If that is the case he needs to get out of there now and not muddle through a couple months before it is announced he has had an on going problem.  Time to give Chris Perez an opportunity?  Maybe so...

Side note, I'm really liking what I've seen in Brendan Ryan these last 2 games.  He needs to be in there on a daily basis.

We cannot lose games like that.  We need every win we can get and we had that one.  Up 2-0 in the ninth, Looper has a great outing, and Issy blows the save.  He always gets me nervous, even in the past.  I am very mad right now after that loss, especially with the Cubs and the Brew Crew losing.  We have to get this game and we're already down 1-0 after a home run by Kaz Matsui in the first.

They should put Izzy in some non save situations.  We can't kepp giving away wins like the other day.

The way to determine if this is in his head or in his arm is to pitch him in mop up situations or with a big lead, where he can't hurt us.

We have too many other guys pitching well right now to just give away wins like this.  However, I wouldn't put Reyes at closer.  I'd move Ryan Franklin to closer and put Springer or McClellan in the set up slot, maybe rotating Reyes into both of those slots depending on the game situation.  Like a 3 run lead in the 9th, I'd take a chance on Reyes, but not with a 1-run lead. pipe
