Oldhead,
I like the Mike Shanahan approach to RB - There's got to be a hole for a back to go thru before you can run the ball - If there is a hole - almost any running back can get thru it.. I just think we needed to go DL at that point with all the OT off the board. What makes a good running back great? Having a friggin O-line in front of him. At #23 in the draft there where certain positions that I'd figured we stay away from - based on risk /value/ need.. QB, TE, Punter are obvious - RB is another I didn;t see us drafting at #23 - If we wanted a power back to take some of the load - there are plenty in the draft that we could have looked at in Day 2. less risk.. better value...
I understand the "best player available" mentality but you need to put need in there too. If the best player on the board at 23 was a QB or TE - there is no way we draft one.. I felt the same was true for RB - my opinion.. I just don;t like this pick - It's glamour pick - Football is won and lost in the trenches and both sides of the ball needed to be upgraded and get younger -when the OT's where off the board - the "no brainer" pick is the best DLinemen available. Either Merling or Balmer. I just dont get this pick - It's like buying a new car - their eyes are all bug eyed.. get it home.. drive it awhile and realize it just gets you from "A" to "B" just like the 8 year old honda.. but cost alot more to maintain.. Risk/value/need
enjoy,
bb

granted the Steelers didnt need a running back as bad as a linebacker, wide reciever, or any lineman but mendenhall is young and so is parker and now it gives the black and gold the strong runner that will be able to compliment parker. najeh is a big strong back but how many carries a game can you give him as well as taking parker out of the game that long? how old is najeh? how much gas you think is left inthe tank? this pick gives a solid back field tandem for at least the next 5 yrs. lineman are deep in the draft and so are decent wide outs... i say good pick and no worries with how much draftage time is left... tomlins first draft as head coach, how bad you think hes really gonna mess this up??? he certainly seems like he knows what he was doing this yr coaching, and im sure it will carry over as he picks this years rookie class. GO STEELERS!

How fast will fast Willie be after breaking his leg? I always thought the Steelheads think of linemen and linebackers first. Then again free agents work well for the Steelheads too.

I love this puck more than Mendenhall! Great draft so far! We have 4 more pics, and they will all be OL & DL. Sweed will give ben a huge target and it will open up more space for my man Holmes. These are total glamour picks, so I hope the O-Line will be better nex year to protect these guys and Ben

Allright, maybe I'm being a jacka$$ but I'm really happy about getting Sweed. That's decent value.
Now lets just get a solid lineman in the 3rd. Maybe John Sullivan from ND or John Greco. They both could take some time to develop since we have Hartwig as a stopgap at C and plenty of experienced (although not good) Guards.

Heck of a draft for the steeler nation so far...
Rashard Mendenhall is a stud and so is Limas Sweed.
Your offense just got more dangerous!
Good luck for the rest of the day and upcoming season.
-Go Seahawks!

I said before I hoped Sweed or Kelly would fall to us. Sweed did, great pick, nice and tall for Ben. Great skill position players for the Steelers, Mendenhall and Sweed. Sure up that O-Line tomorrow. I dunno about you but I'm excited.

And to think, I thought this would be a boring draft for Steeler Nation with all D-Line & O-Line picks. By golly i was wrong! The will average 30+ Points/Game next season. I love it. But still need O-Line. I am quite surprised by our first two picks, but will take it!
