We all talked about sliding Kellen Winslow to the slot at the begining of this year as we had no real #3 receiver. With JJ hanging in the towel at the end of the year is this a precursor to a move of that sort or is this just an insurance pick for the Browns? Any thoughts?
Well said jcameron. After sleeping on this and digesting the pick I have to think you are right here. With K2 constantly playing with injury, I think Rucker will eventually replace Winslow at TE. I dont think it will be after this season but likely next year when JJ retires. He is a great pass catching tight end, and has room to put some more on his frame, which will boost his run blocking...which we know, although improved...K2 still is not the best at.
I think that in 2009, you will see K2 playing the slot with Edwards adn Stallworth outside. Then Rucker will be the tight end. That is the best possible scenario in my mind. Imagine the mismatches with that arsenal. The defense would have to cover 3 good/great receivers in Stallworth, Winslow, and Edwards. And then they would have to cover Rucker who is a great pass catcher out of the TE spot.
The only other scenario is that Rucker is simply an insurance policy. Look at most successful teams in the NFL...they all have quality TE's:
IND - Dallas Clark
DAL - Jason Witten
NYG - Jeremy Shockey
NE - Ben Watson
SD - Antonio Gates
If K2 suffers another year ender...we know have a good backup to come in. I didn't realize Heiden may never play again before. I just wish they would've given less to get this guy later...and I wish I would've seen a DB brought it. Without picking up a DB, I hope they have someone to grab still in Free Agency...
