I have to move to the "this pick makes no sense" camp.

Yes, I understand we need an insurance policy because K2 is always under a knife and Heiden is old.  If we are sitting and this guy falls into our lap then definitely I go with the "best player available" arguement.

He is not a blocker.  He is a pass catcher.

But I don't understand giving up next year #3 to go get this guy.

we could give up a few of next years picks because we will get them back (and probably better ones) when we trade one of our QB's next year. there is no way we will be able to keep both of them.

We all talked about sliding Kellen Winslow to the slot at the begining of this year as we had no real #3 receiver. With JJ hanging in the towel at the end of the year is this a precursor to a move of that sort or is this just an insurance pick for the Browns? Any thoughts?

I think Heidens days are numbered mostly because of his injury Id assume. It must be worse than we all know. We will see plenty of this guy and K2 on the field at the same time this year no doubt.

well...when they were evaluating the pic, I'm sure they factored in that Kellen has missed significant time in the previous years and he did just have a scope done.  And Sanders from what I hear just had back surgery...so, not necessarily our greatest need, but the TE we took kind of has the same skill sets as Winslow.

I'm still surprised we didn't pick a corner.  I'm thinking Lito Sheppard in a trade for next year's second or we just wait for him to be cut and we pick him up in FA.

Sorry...not sure if it was Sanders or Steve Heiden they were talking about just getting back surgery.

You got that right Browns #1

Heiden is near done. I haven't read the details on the surgery.

Dinkins is a mistake he did nothing but screw up on special teams.

I would expect 2 more TE free agent signings too.

Incase you all haven't noticed Winslow is only listed as a TE.

9 of 10 times he lines up as a slot WR.

So any records he sets are totally misconstrued.

But if you can get away with it, what the heck!

Hey Browns fans-

Just wanted to check out your forums to see what you guys think of Rucker. I read a lot of mixed opinions. Being a Mizzou and KC Chiefs fan I was wondering why you guys picked up Rucker as well. And why the Chiefs passed on him. No matter the reason, I can tell you that Rucker is a stud. He was the most talented and impressive TE in college last season and put up steller numbers. The man is a steal and you guys have another true playmaker in cleveland. have a good season browns fans.

Well said jcameron.  After sleeping on this and digesting the pick I have to think you are right here.  With K2 constantly playing with injury, I think Rucker will eventually replace Winslow at TE.  I dont think it will be after this season but likely next year when JJ retires.  He is a great pass catching tight end, and has room to put some more on his frame, which will boost his run blocking...which we know, although improved...K2 still is not the best at.

I think that in 2009, you will see K2 playing the slot with Edwards adn Stallworth outside.  Then Rucker will be the tight end.  That is the best possible scenario in my mind.  Imagine the mismatches with that arsenal.  The defense would have to cover 3 good/great receivers in Stallworth, Winslow, and Edwards.  And then they would have to cover Rucker who is a great pass catcher out of the TE spot.

The only other scenario is that Rucker is simply an insurance policy.  Look at most successful teams in the NFL...they all have quality TE's:

IND - Dallas Clark
DAL - Jason Witten
NYG - Jeremy Shockey
NE - Ben Watson
SD - Antonio Gates

If K2 suffers another year ender...we know have a good backup to come in.  I didn't realize Heiden may never play again before.  I just wish they would've given less to get this guy later...and I wish I would've seen a DB brought it.  Without picking up a DB, I hope they have someone to grab still in Free Agency...

When did Heidens injury become so serious? Initially they were just saying that he would be out 3 weeks and would be fine (which did seem odd).  This guy will be a stud.  Imagine our offense with 4 guys that arguably have hands of a number one reciever all on the field at one time!! (might be a lower tier one for 2 of em, but still good hands)
