Sorry but i posted this on accident before i wrote anything, but i thought the Lions had a horrible draft in my opinion. With Otah, and Mendenhall sitting right there, and also Talib who is perfect for the system. What do they do ... they draft some guy i've never even heard of, and the second rounder.. who the #%@$ is that? the only thing they did good was getting the RB in the third round. i put away alot of beers after their first selection, and it only increased with the second pick. Let me know your thoughts.

Otah is a guard and they needed a right tackle, I don't know about the LB from Colorado, he's sketchy to me but getting Smith isn't a bad pick and i think that the KR they got from wake forest could be dangerous and I think that Avril from Purdue could be a good outside pass rusher, I think they get a solid B for what they did, of course that all changes once they put on a Lions uniform and we find out what they can do on the pro level but I think that they did a decent job.

Otah is a tackle - he should start right away. Smith in round three was a good value and addressed a need.

Upgrade, the fact that you haven't heard of Gosder Cherilus before doesn't mean he's not an excellent tackle. Mostly, it probably means you didn't really pay any attention to the draft other than the guys expected to go in the first dozen picks. Gosder Cherilus has been rated the 5th best OT on the boards at least since the combine. Pre-combine, he was expected to go at the top of the 2nd, but for the past month and a half has been viewed as a lock for the mid to late first round. The guy is good, and he is experienced, having started every game for several years in a pro-style offense at BC.
The reason he was not among the OTs talked about having a potential to go in the first half of the round is that he is a natural Right Tackle, and right tackles aren't as much in demand as Left Tackles. So, in truth, Cherilus was probably a reach because right tackles don't generally demand that high of a slot in the draft. But the fact that you hadn't heard of him doesn't make him a bad pick. It just means you haven't really paid attention.
Dizon in the second is well thought-of as a linebacker. He'll certainly make the team and will have a chance to start. I thought he went pretty high to Detroit. He wasn't projected to go until round three and some boards didn't have him till the fourth, but Detroit obviously thought highly of him.
The pick of Smith was nice, and so was the pick of Clif Avril. Avril is very very good-- a second round talent who can blitz and hit. This is the kind of LB who can intimidate. He fell this far because of character red flags. He could be quite a steal.
I don't feel Detroit had a great draft, but Cherilus should a solid starter for years, and Smith, Dizon and Avril should all be able to contribute though they might not be stars.

I think the Lions had a solid B draft. I really liked what they did on the 2nd day.
The first rounder Cherilus was a bit of reach, but others wanted him in the next 10 picks so trading back was not an option. I'm glad they didn't draft Otah or Mendenhall. I didn't like Otah at all. I question his work ethic and desire to play football, both common complaints about him throughout college. Mendenhall was not a fit for the Lions and would have been a risky pick. He had problems with fumbling in college and he was coming out of the spread offense, which is not a good indicator if he will succeed in zone blocking scheme the Lions will run.
The 2nd round pick of Dizon has me scratching my head. Yes he had flashy stats in college for a LB, but he has huge questions about his size and speed. I don't even remember anyone rating him higher than a 5th rounder and the Lions picked him in the 2nd. Great instinctions and production are one thing, but the MLB in the Tampa-2 requires speed which he is definitely lacking. I'm not as worred about his size. There are many productive LBs in the NFL at his size.

I think the Lions did alright.
Gosder Cherilous over Jeff Otah could work out well for Detroit. They were rated similarly with Otah rated higher by most because of his higher ceiling, but Cherilous rated out well because of his higher floor. And I think a factor in the Lions moving down was that the top players they wanted were gone and they liked both Otah and Cherious thus being alright with either one if both fell to them at #17. And if you've never heard of Cherilous, that's your problem because he's been projected as a first rounder all the way through the process...
As for Jordon Dizon, if he was more of a physical specimen he'd have been a first rounder because of his production which was second to none - 463 tackles in college is quite a few (8th best of all time). He's one of the top options at MLB, which was a glaring need, and after Jerod Mayo was picked up at #10 by the Patriots and Atlanta picked up Curtus Lofton at #37 he was likely the best MLB for a Tampa-2 still available.
As for Kevin Smith, he's a big time player who the Lions got due to their trade down in the first - and he should be a really good back in the zone-blocking scheme the Lions have planned for this year. Rashard Mendenhall wasn't as much better then Kevin Smith as Gosder Cherilous was better then John Greco, meaning the Lions seemed to have done alright with the ordering of those two offensive picks.
The Lions filled needs with good players using these picks and added good football players with the rest of their draft. And you don't need to take my word for it - Prisco gave them a B+ on the draft, and Rick Gosselin gave them an A (www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/football/nfl/stories/042808dnspogosselingrades.3945201.html) and since neither of them is very giving with their grades - you can expect that they think just as highly of this draft class as I do...
(Now if you wanted to change that title to put down the Raiders draft class I wouldn't have as much of a problem.... )

check out the site guys. its kind of like fantasy football but instead of picking nfl players you create your own player and control his career. you can pick your position get drafted boost your abilities and it keeps track of all your stats throughout your career. i ran across it a couple of days ago and its really easy to set up. once you set up your player go to forums and select player looking of team, pick the best contract proposal and you are ready to go.

The draft was actually quite solid, as many of the previous responders have indicated. However, to the fan that doesn't watch a ton of college football, or read gigabytes of internet data on prospects (which I don't do), it didn't appear to be an overwhelming draft. We didn't get any flashy name guys. I think we've gotten too used to having a top 5-10 pick and at least having one player drafted that EVERYONE has heard of...even the novice fan. That didn't happen this year, so too many people automatically think it was a bad draft.
That being said....as Matt Millen was involved....the proof will probably be that it WAS a bad draft!!! :)
