Minnesota Vikings

Including the trade for Jared Allen prior to the draft which involved 3 Vikings draft picks, I would give the overall draft for Minnesota a B-.

The addition of Tyrell Johnson helps our secondary greatly and even though we added Madeiu Williams this offseason, I feel Tyrell can push for a starting spot in this secondary. Pick Grade: A-.

Drafting John David Booty hopefully brings some incentive to Tarvaris Jackson to step up his game or he could be out.  However, the lack of arm strength will be a struggle for Booty. Although, his knowledge of the system will help him greatly.  Pick Grade: C+.

Even though Pat Williams is getting up there in age, the Selection of Letroy Guion still confuses me.  Minnesota needed a big, possesion reciever to compliment Bernard Berrian and the rising Sidney Rice.  Pick Grade: C-.

Although he hasnt had much praise, the selection of John Sullivan makes perfect sense to me.  Matt Birk is getting older and is one of the top Centers in the league, so Sullivan will have a great mentor in Birk and perhaps someday when Birk retires, he will have a great opportunity to start.  Pick Grade: C.

The Vikings finally attempted to better their biggest need on offense, but it was, in my oppinion, too late. Jaymar Johnson was credited for his speed but Minnesota already has speed at the position, and remember what happened last time we drafted a reciever for speed? (See Troy Williamson) Pick Grade: C-.

Steelers

1. Rashard Mendenhall.  Great pickup, didn't think he would be there, but when a top 15 back falls in your lap at #23 you take him. This will give the Steelers a bruising inside runner (Davenport ran to upright) and also will extend the career of Fast Wille Parker. Will give the Steelers a nice 1-2 punch they haven't had since Jerome Bettis retired. Final grade A

2. Limas Sweed.  Again, fell into their lap.  This gives Ben Roethlisberger the 'big" WR he wanted. Reminds me a lot of Plaxico Burress.  He has the luxuary of not having to come in right away and start.  Already have Santonio Holmes Hines Ward Nate Washington and Heath Miller.  All he needs to do is come in, learn the system, and get better at running routes.  I can see him catching between 25 and 35 passes and scoring 5 or 6 TD's.  Final Grade A

3. Bruce Davis. This guy is a typical Steelers 3-4 Linebacker.  Played DE in college, his game transitions well to the Steelers DEF.  Can be a valuable backup to James Harrison and Lamar Woodley and play special teams.  May be the replacement for Harrison in a few years. Final Grade B-

4. Tony Hills.  Big Mountain of a man, but I heard he played soft in college.  Everyone wants to harp about how bad the Steelers OL was last year.  I think it has been overhyped.  The problem was Sean Mahan at C.  That guy was terrible!!!!  With the addtiion of Justin Hartwig (would still like to see them try Willie Colon at C., the line will be better.  I dont' know that Tony Hills will even make the team.  Projected OL on the 53 man roster (Marvell Smith LT, Chris Kemoateu, LG, Justin Hartwig C, Kendall Simmons RG, Max Starks, RT, Willie Colon G/C/T, Sean Mahan G, Trai Essex T) that's 8 OL add in Darnell Stapleton G/C and the rookie free agent Doug Legursky G/C and Tony Hills may end up on the practice squad if anythign.  Final Grade (for now) C-

5. Dennis Dixon.  Don't know what to think of this pick. Is he the next Omar Jacobs or the Next Kordell Steward (for Steelers fans neither one of those is good).  I think he can come in and eventually be groomed as Big Ben's backup as Charlie Batch will be applying for AARP soon.  He can also be used as a gadget type guy alas Antwan Randel-El.  Final Grade C

6.Mike Humpal.  Probably won't make the team unless he turns into a special teams ace.  IF  he fills a role on special teams and can play some emergency LB then great.  Hard to give a low round pick a high grade.  But Final Grade C-

6. Ryan Mundy.  See Mike Humpal.  Could  contribute on special teams. Dont' think he will see the field at SS or FS with Ryan Clark Troy Polomalu, Anthony Smith and Tyrone Carter on the roster.  Final Grade C-
