I am not a big lover for a full blown playoff system but I was a fan of the plus one model and now this looks like it wont happen... really disappointed, the BCS I think has been good for college football so far but it does need a little tweak and to me that was the 4 team playoff model... I wonder why these guys dont see it as a good thing... it would only create more money for College Football????

This is the best news I have heard all year. A playoff, whether it be eight teams or four, is simply not needed, nor is the BCS. College football was perfect before, I see no reason why it should not return to the old way. Great job Big Ten, keep up the good work.

oh yeah co champions is such a great thing, its the only sport that doesnt have one. It's a JOKE and the conferences dont want one because of money it has nothing to do with keeping tradition. The bowls dont want to not be considered a stepping stone to a national championship.

OSUBOB, the reason the big ten and pac 10 don't want a playoff is because they know what will happen: an SEC team will win more often than not, and that wouldn't be good for their leagues. Hate to say it, but did OSU look like they deserved to be in the NC game the last two years? If it wasn't for their media darling status, they wouldn't have been there. And if you've been paying attention to the media lately, they are fawning over OSU again.

The reason there won't be a playoff system is because there's no way to divide up the insane amounts of revenue it will generate. It doesn't matter what conference wins gator07, the money is equally divided between the teams/conferences when invited to play in a BCS game. However, in a playoff format, there's NEW money to be made. The money in merchandising alone, "NCAA BCS Playoff" gear will be a must have for everyone. There's no way to distribute that money to all the BCS conferences. In addition, all the major conferences are going to want their share of advertising revenue. There's no way to even predict how much the networks will charge main sponsors and various other companies for advertising. The cost alone for a 30 second commercial for the national semi-finals and then again finals I guarantee will be more than the Super Bowl. Will companies pay that amount for two weekends of advertising? If so, how will those monies be distributed?

Remember, this isn't about who wins or loses on the field, it's all about money, plain and simple. The PAC 10 and Big 10 are staunch opponents to the playoff format or plus one format because they are currently benefiting monetarily from their own contract with the Rose Bowl. Money, Money, Money!!!

Mandalay, you are right in that it's ALL about the money. The 6 Rich BCS Conferences & "get a free ride" Notre Dame definitely do not want to share it with anyone.   For Pete's Sake, can we not get some the Freakin' Politics out of College Football and develop some type of playoff? The old Gezers in charge, like the Ex-Tarhole, John Swofford, piss me off!

Mandalay is right on the money on this one. This has nothing to do with actual competitive measures. These Conference chairmans are a bunch of greedy jerks who are worried that a change would affect their cash flow.

The reason we will not get a playoff is strictly money based. The BCS conferences don't want to share any more of the money than they have to. It was only public outcry that caused them to allow a non-BCS school into the games if certain conditions are met. That's why we've only seen 3 I think (Utah, Boise St and Hawaii). Every other sport can have a playoff in the NCAA but football doesn't. What a joke.

To make matters worse, its only the BCS championships that don't have a playoff, all be cause of selfishness. If the "BCS Powers" realized they could get nearly 3 times as much $$ from a playoff system, even if shared with the non-BCS playoff participants, then it'd be nothing. I'd say for each round to have a certain percentage set to give each school that make the playoffs. So that way if the BCS "powers" lose to the non-BCS underdogs, then there is no excuse for whining about loss of money.

SOS1984  continue living in dreamland. The rest of us will turn to other sports where money doesn't dictate everything.  I would personally love for college football to go on strike if that' s possible. Then these corrupt presidents would be sweating and entertaining all offers to improve their "entertainment product."  College football was perfect when it wasn't on TV all week long.
