Well, Jordy was a surprise, never saw that one coming. Thought the Packers were set pretty well at WR, I wonder if there is some problem with Jones that Thompson sees or if this is a future replacement for Driver. Anyway, thought the Packers could've done better here.
However, the QB and CB I have no trouble with, both could be diamonds in the rough, especially if Rodgers does not work out. And you can never have too many good CBs, especially with Harris looking a bit more unreliable last year.
But when it comes down to it, I really don't know jack about this stuff, I'll let Thompson make these decisions. So far, he hasn't done too badly. Overall, I'd give this a B, maybe a B-.
You will be pretty pleased with Jordy Nelson. This was a walk-on his freshman year that worked his way up to the 2nd WR taken in the 2008 draft 4 years later. Awesome speed, unbelievable hands and extreme football smarts. Think Wes Welker, but bigger. I'm happy for him. Green Bay and all its lore is a great place for him to start his career. My only regret was that the Chiefs, who have had an amazing draft thus far, had too many more pressing needs to fill that we couldn't have snagged him ourselves. Trust me, you won't be dissappointed in Jordy.
Jordy is most definitely a future slot man after Driver retires. He won't be much more than that. I would've picked up Kelly or Sweed, because I don't know if Jones will be enough to take the heat off of Jennings, eventually.
I've been looking through the bios of the packers' draftees, and I've noticed a couple of common threads. 1) with the exception of Brohm, who was a gift, they all had breakthrough seasons in 2007, but not much before that, and 2) they're all great students who like to study playbooks and film. So brightness and upside are the keywords in the Packer's war room, I suppose.
I don't know how to grade this draft, but I decided earlier this year that TT is way, way smarter than me in terms of NFL personnel. I mean, the proof is in the pudding: he's assembled a deep, talented, cohesive roster through a series of moves that have made us all want to boo, cringe, or scream, even. He isn't flashy and he doesn't care what we think of him, and that's good, too.
A final note about Brohm: Barring a catastrophic injury, there's no way he starts next year. The Packers just won't go with a rookie when they've got a guy who has three years of NFL film study under his belt. I expect them to sign a cheap, veteran QB and make Brohm third string. Now, it might be an entirely different story two or three years down the road... but for now, it's understudy time for Brian.
I don't like the trade of picks with Minnesota. Maybe it is just me, but to allow anyone in your division to move up (and select a quality QB nontheless!) is rarely a good thing. I just hope that Booty does not pan out in Minnesota or this draft could come back to haunt us for many years to come.
Booty never showed any star quality at USC, he looked good because of the talent around him, so I have no qualms about the Vikes picking him up. Geez, look at Leinart, he was the perfect QB and he's doing nothing as of yet, so I really doubt Booty will do much, maybe not even make the roster.
Before the draft i was thinking "Man this Jordy is going to be good for some team" not expecting the Packers to draft him. I was extremely happy they got him. He reminds me of a faster, quicker Ed Mccaffrey who was no slouch. No reason for Rodgers to say he does not have any targets to throw to. Maybe Mike Mccarthy will be using 5 wides alot more than last year. I was hoping for another rb though. Oh well cant get em all.
