A ruling like this was one year too late for the Phoenix Suns. Members of the Celtics and Hawks moved as far away from the bench as some of the Suns did last year but aren't getting suspended. If Stern wanted to be consistent than Kendrick Perkins, Marvin Williams and even Kevin Garnett should have been given a game off. I don't think they deserved it but Garnett's attempted elbow and two players stepping onto the court from the bench were similar to last year. It is these types of incosistencies (and poor calls of suspensions last season) as to why David Stern is a horrible commissioner. I guess he is too worried about getting that franchise in Oklahoma City or overseas expansion to make consistent rulings.

Can't have anything as inconvenient as rules get in the way of Stern's dream match up of a Lakers v. Celtics championship.

As a Celts fan, I have to agree, there is only one reasonable action to take after the precedent of the Suns game and many more during the regular season last year. Kendrick Perkins and Marvin Williams had to be suspended.

How BS is this move? What a joke! It's a wonder why so many people say they don't watch for injustices like this. Wait, not really. I too would be pretty pissed if a were a Suns fan. I think it's weak just as a fan of basketball.

This is going to piss some people off. I hated the ruling last year against the Suns (even though I am a Spurs fan, especially since it was reason to whine against them), and am really confused by the inconsistency. They stepped on the court to go get involved in the skirmish. Period. According to the rule that sat Amare, if you get on the court when you are not supposed to be, that is against the rules and you get suspended. It doesn't rule out guys who take only one step, it doesn't even rule out falling out of your chair onto the court. Stoudamire gets suspended, but not these guys because the league FINALLY decides to use some COMMON SENSE?? I applaud the fact that they actually tried THINKING for once, but I don't see why they didn't try this last year as well. Oh well. At least now no one can ***** about their team being handicapped...

If that was someone else, like Rasheed Wallace that pushed an official he would have been suspended for a couple of games, playoff or no playoff.

I think the part about Garnett pushing the ref and not getting suspended shocked me. They just fined two people $25,000 for making menacing looks at benches.

This is going to cause such an outrage. (if it hasn't already) I just can't believe this. I want the NBA to not be taken as a joke so bad but it's really hard when something like this happens. Steve Nash gets checked into the scorers table and his teammates concerned about his safety take two steps on the court and it costs them possibly an NBA championship. But since this is just the 1 seed vs the 8 seed, I guess it doesn't really count now does it? Why does this issue ONLY come up during the playoffs?? So stupid.

Douche bag Dave Stern makes his own rules as it suits him again!!!! He is determined to move the Sonics to Okietown no matter what Bennett says or does and he doesn't suspend anyone for leaving the bench in the Celtic/Hawks game. As one of the respondents said Stern wants nothing to get in the way of a Lakers/Celtics final. It sure looks that way by this non ruling.

David Stern better hold up the same rules that he did last year, or this is going to be ridiculous. When I saw Kevin Garnett and whoever the other guy is, Pavlocic? get into eachother's faces, I knew that there was going to be at least one person get off the bench and end up on the court. And since David Stern was actually at this game, it puts even more pressure to rule it the same way.

Kegzilla,
I couldn't agree with you more. Stern would love to get the Celtics into the Finals so he can market the Big Three (Garnett, Pierce, and Allen). He'd hype them up for these all-stars getting a shot at their first ring. The Eastern Conference is already considered the weaker conference by most and and the 8 seed beating the 1 seed would rain on his parade.

I completely agree that if the 'getting of the bench' rule is not a gray area, then there should be suspension for those guys. If it was black and white last year and there was no room for consideration and they didn't change the rule over the off season, then you have to suspend those guys.
With the Garnett thing, i once watched an NBA game where Eddie Najera as a Maverick was complaining about a call and put his hand on the ref's shoulder and the ref ejected him from the game. It wasn't a confrontational incident, he was just talking to the ref. However, i think the referee has to interpret whether the contact was aimed at him or not and make the choice for an ejection. If the ref doesn't eject Garnett, i'm pretty sure the league won't suspend him.
Personally, i think we should be watching the Garnett-less Celtics in the next game and that everyone's statement of "if it was Rasheed Wallace or anyone else" is completely correct and the league just can't wait for Celtics-Lakers. I just find it disappointing.

Yeah, this ruins the league's consistency when it comes to suspensions due to altercations. One side of me is happy because it's such a shame to see a great series decided in part by key players being suspended. But at the same time, it does make you wonder what would've happened if that were some other random, less storied franchise and not Boston. If they're gonna call it in some instances, they gotta call it in all of them. Whether or not KG realized it was the ref who grabbed him, he definitely pushed him off. And they really need to change the ruling in regards to players stepping on the court, but that seems unlikely at this point. Both Marvin Williams and Kendrick Perkins had a least one foot inbounds. Perkins took a step or two towards the fray as well, I couldn't see if Williams did or not.
