As far as leisure activities go, the Indianapolis Colts are the most enjoyable thing in my life.  Not just rooting for them, but also thinking about various aspects of the players, team, and organization.  Leading up to, and including the draft, you guys gave me so much to think about, not to mention how much I learned from all of you.  So it occurred to me that it would be fun to start a thread, where we can post thinking points and topics of discussion, as the organization builds the 2008 Colts through training camp and the pre-season.  This would also be a good forum for somebody who has a question, as there is a wealth of knowledge available to them through all of you.  We all won't agree on everything, but let's not argue about things.  Information and conversation are way better than one-upsmanship.  C'mon guys, show your passion for the Colts!

1.  Gary Brackett is going to be an Unrestricted Free Agent after the 2008 season.  I'm a bit concerned that this season might be his last as a Colt because of their history of letting LB's walk.  Two thoughts come to mind. (1) He calls the defense and there's no other LB on the team experienced enough to do that.  (2)  Do you think the market is already saturated with undersized LB's?  He's gonna make $2,723,750 this season, and I'm wondering if the Colts might put a bit more with that and try to keep him.  Say 3-3.5 mil a year?  Will he be reasonable in order to stay with the Colts?

2.  Rob Morris is counting $366,667 toward the cap this season.  I wonder how much the Colts would have to put with that to bring him back?  At the very least, he's a great backup for the Mike and Sam, and adds experienced depth.  He also has enough experience to wear the receiver helmet when Brackett is not on the field.

3.  This is how the new draft class is listed on the roster:  Mike Hart - RB; Pierre Garcon - WR; Jacob Tamme and Tom Santi - TE; Steve Justice - C; Mike Pollak and Jamey Richard - OG;  Marcus Howard - DE; Philip Wheeler - LB.  I'd say that pretty much tells how the Colts are projecting them.

4.  Of the 90 players currently on the Colts roster, 50 of them were on the team last season.  If you take away the 9 draftees and the 13 new URFA's, that still leaves 68.  Didn't I tell you it was going to be tough making the final cut to 53?  Position by position totals:  QB - 4; RB - 7 (including Clifton Dawson); WR - 12; TE - 6 (not counting Justin Snow); C - 2; OT - 8; OG - 6; DT - 8; DE - 8 (interestingly, Keyunta Dawson is listed here); LB - 9; DB - 15 (including TJ Rushing); K - 2; P -2.

Well, that should spark a thought or two.

Some thoughts on your post -

I would like to see the Colts keep Brackett but the cap is tight.  Unless Marvin Harrison or another player takes less money, I am not sure it will happen.  He would be a good player to keep but I am worried they drafted Wheeler to learn a season under him and take his place.  The Colts always have a plan and draft for free agent losses in advance.

Dawson as DE might be a better fit.

I would very much like to see the Colts bring back Rob Morris.  The depth he would provide at linebacker and his special teams play if he is a backup would be valuable to the Colts.

Good post SPEED. I honestly have a great time in thinking about and talking about this Indianapolis Colts organization even though the g/f gets mad that I'm on here all the time.

1. There is only one other LB on the active roster who can play this position and thats Tyjuan Hagler. He's the only LB on the team who can play all 3 spots. I have a feeling though that Phillip Wheeler is going to get a crack at this position because of how well he plays against the run. He's been noted as being a very good LB who can shed blockers and being a MLB you need to be able to do that. His only downfall though is his coverage abilities. The good thing is you can't teach speed, which he has, but you can teach him how to read and react to coverages. Clint Sessions may also get a look at the position as well, but I think he's in the same boat as Phillip Wheeler in that he's not too good in reading coverages, but again its something he can be taught. Looking at coltscap.net it looks to me though that Gary is signed through 2009.

2. I think if they brought Morris back he would be a special teams guy and maybe a 3rd string LB. If there is a roster spot for him I'm all for it as 360k isn't going to hurt the cap at all, but with the addition of Wheeler while also having Session and Guzman I don't think they are going to have room for him. Morris has always been one of Polian's favorites though so you never know.

3. I have no issues with the way they are listed but I think Wheeler and Howard will help boost our special teams unit. That area is in definite need of being upgraded. I think those 2 added to the unit make it very strong.

4. There will be household Colts names that don't make it this year. There is a lot of young talent on this team and 53 spots are all they have. I think I will start a thread with  whom I believe makes the 53 man roster. Should be challenging!

I feel your pain.  My wife gets mad too.  Hey, I warned her before we got together that I was a Colts fan.

I wish the Colts could have a 60 man roster.  They are going to wind up cutting some very talented players.

Jim, I thought it interesting that Keyunta was listed as a DE because Dungy said they were going to leave him at DT.

B'blu, I wasn't so much talking about having guys that could play Mike, I was talking about having a guy to call the defense.  That needs to be a LB and Brackett and Morris are the only ones with the experience, IMO.  And discussing the roster is one of the things this thread is for.  Feel free to post your thoughts on the final 53.  We can all hash it over the way we did the draft needs.

My wife thinks I spend too much time on the computer, period.  LOL

53 spots on the roster, and here is my draft of who makes it.

QB
Peyton Manning
Jim Sorgi

RB
Joseph Addai
Mike Hart
Kenton Keith
Clifton Dawson

WR
Marvin Harrison
Reggie Wayne
Anthony Gonzalez
Roy Hall (could be moved to TE/HB)
Devin Aromashadu
Pierre Garcon

TE
Dallas Clark
Jacob Tamme
Tom Santi
Gijon Robinson
Bryan Fletcher

OL
Tony Ugoh
Jeff Saturday
Ryan Lilja
Ryan Diem
Mike Pollack
Dylan Gandy
Michael Toudouze
Charlie Johnson

DT
Ed Johnson
Quinn Pitcock
Raheem Brock
Darrell Reid

DE
Dwight Freeney
Robert Mathis
Keyunta Dawson (moved here due to roster label)
Marcus Howard
Josh Thomas

LB
Tyjuan Hagler
Gary Brackett
Freddie Keiaho
Clint Session
Phillip Wheeler
Ramon Guzmon

DB
Kelvin Hayden
Marlin Jackson
Donte Hughes
Michael Coe
Tim Jennings
TJ Rushing
Bob Sanders
Antoine Bethea
Matt Giordano
Melvin Bullet

ST
Justin Snow
Hunter Smith
Adam Vinatieri

Thats my 53. Obviously we pretty much know who most of starters are going to be, but some were questionable. I think Tim Jennings, and I know he isn't like much among the fans, gets a spot but they seriously need to look at him as a nickel back and not be lining up against Moss or other #1's. His size gets him beat every time. I also think Jeff Charleston gets cut due to him being of the same mold as Josh Thomas and the Colts aren't looking for a duplicate of him. I would have liked to add another DT in there but I don't know anything about the ones they picked up this past weekend so I kept it to the obvious. I'm interested in seeing other people's rosters.
