I thought Mike D'Antoni was going to get fired from the Suns before Avery got fired from the Mavs.

Bring back Nellie; I'm sure Don Nelson couldn't do any worse of a job, who is more offensive minded that would fit this Mavs team better.

I agree, Greek. Can't believe that he was the first playoff coach to get fired. Avery has done wonders for the Mavs. You have to figure that Johnson got the Mavs to within 2 games of a NBA championship a couple years ago. What other coach in Mavs history did that before? Its not like Avery did a bad job coaching in the series with the Hornets.... It was just that Byron Scott did a better job coaching and the Mavs ran into a hot Hornets team. Chris Paul is playing ball out-of-his-mind this year.

If a top tier coach like Avery Johnson gets fired for being on the losing end of a series against a very good basketball team, then no coaches job is going to be safe this offseason. Maybe D'Antoni's  or Phil Jackson's job is next if the Lakers lose to Utah or Houston in the next round.....

I can't see how it is Avery Johnson's fault that the Mavs did not make it far in the playoffs. Mark Cuban has to take a long look at the roster and scratch his head and say hey we are not that good and I bet who ever comes in to coach this Mavs team will not do a better job than Avery. Hell Don Nelson wouldn't of gotten this team past a young team with a Point Guard like Chris Paul. Avery will be picked up right away and The Chicago Bulls  will be the first to call him. Another good move by the Mavs, first you give up Devin Harris and Diop for a old Jason Kidd and now you fire Avery! WOW! Yep! The future for a championship is bright! YEAH RIGHT!

i can see why its averys fault... for one... he for one had horrible lineup changes and his players weren't recognizing mismatches on either end of the floor which comes back to avery telling the players to expoit the mismatches

Let's not forget just who it is we're dealing with at the head of the table. Cuban has little patience for failure, especially at such a high price. They tanked the finals that they had all but won, they lose in the first round to an 8-seed in Golden State (and Don Nelson, who Cuban loathes), and now are all but swept in the first round. Cuban's pride, more than the money, won't let him sit back and not make a coaching change after back to back to back playoff embarassment. I think Jeff Van Gundy would be a good fit for the team. He might improve the D and add some toughness (mental and physical) to guys like Nowitzki and Howard, who've both showed a serious lack of it in their playoff failures of the past few years.

I think if D'Antoni is out in Phoenix it will be by his own free will. I think he's about ready to move on due to not seeing eye-to-eye with the front office and Steve Kerr's determination to get the team to actually play defense. Kerr is in essence saying what I and alot of others have known for awhile now: D'Antoni's run and gun style without more focus on defense can't win against seasoned teams in the playoffs. All it's good for is a nice looking regular season winning percentage.

Too bad for Avery, good coach and even better person.  In a couple of years, he will look back and be thankful of this.  The players really need to addressed in this situation.  Howard might as will stayed home this series.  Dampier is just a big waste of space.  Dirk... well Dirk is one heck of a regular season player.  It's too bad because I really like the guys on this team.  I just don't think they have what it takes to win in the playoffs.

Avery worked with what he had and Dallas is not that good lets be honest. They made a trade in the middle of the season thinking that Jason Kidd could help but then you change the teams make up in the middle of the season and the team was a 38-15 then if my memory serves me right and they go from that to barley making the playoffs. You don't change a team in the middle of the season and expect to not loose some timing and rhythm. Bad move in the middle of the season bottom line. Avery had bad rotation naw! They just did not show up ready to play a hot team in New Orleans! avery did his part the team on the floor did not. Bottom line.
