Avery has an inability to adapt in-game. Even when the Mavs are getting killed and their game plan obviously isn't working, Avery isn't able to change up the plan and adapt. He also makes bad sub decisions. He'll put the wrong guys out there at the wrong time. The other problem this season is Josh Howard. He's missing everything even as simple as lay-ups. He is soposed to be a big part of this team like the past 2 seasons and this season he just fell apart. Hard to believe he was an All Star just last season.

Cuban knew that after the early playoff exit, a lot of critics and fans would look at it and blame the losses on Jason Kidd and Cuban. So Cubes had to make a big stunt by firing Coach AJ, who is in fact an excellent coach who brought the Mavericks, one of the worst defensive teams to the top of the league in defense. The firing was only to take attention away from the impending cries and complaints about Kidd.
This is a stupid move and will not help the team at all, in fact, it will make the team even worse. If it's not broken, don't fix it. Cuban should never have traded Devin Harris away in the first place. Look for the team to go downhill from this point.

Just because you won the lottery doesnt mean you automatically know about basketball, do what good owners do and worry about the money and winning, what an idiot.

Cuban deserves all the blame completely changing team dynamics and only giving two months for the new Mavs to gel. He should of waited until the end of next year before evaluating Avery's handling of the new team.
One thing that is rarely discussed is that Kidd's effectiveness hasn't diminished with age so much as it has by the NBA's rule change regarding zone defense. There is no need to guard Kidd man to man because he can't knock down a shot. If you are the best passer in the world, you still have to be able to keep a defense honest by at least seeming to be an offensive threat. Cuban's failing to understand this is why I think he slammed his own window shut.

lmao...i love how everyone is on the maverick bandwagon. at first cuban was the greatest, now hes the worst. i think personally that the kidd move was good because kidd is a great point guard. the coach needed to redo the coaching strategy because kidd is not a run and gun kinda guy, he is a half court offense point guard. they need to change up thier gameplan and he didnt do it. however he should not have been fired because he is a great coach and knows the game. the players are choke artists and dont know how to be "clutch". thats the problem, not avery or cuban. hopefully avery comes to the Knicks and revamps our teams mental process and teaches these morons how to play some real basketball.

I agree Cuban should somehow let himself go and take a "hands off" approach to ownership, it's obvious that he knows nothing about the NBA. However, the BLAME if you will should rest squarely on the shoulders of Donnie Nelson. What a dolt, he is the NBA's biggest "yes" man, perhaps in the history of the league (with all due respect to Mitch Kupchak). Nelson had to have the balls to say NO to trading Devin Harris away for an aging Jason Kidd...period. This is why the Mavs lost this season and couldn't win enough in the West to be better than a seven seed.
Good Luck going forward Dallas...you'll need it.

I don't believe I can agree with that argument. However, as I am a Spurs' fan, perhaps the Mavericks' fans would rather not hear from me. Still, I'll state my case.
Mark Cuban made the Mavericks contenders. As hard as it is to envision, when he bought the team, and started investing in them, and started investing in getting the Dallas people involved in professional basketball, the Mavericks began to be a part of Dallas.
No longer was Dallas just a Football city. Basketball was fun, it was interesting, and though I wince to say it, it was hip.
I grew up in Kentucky, and there has never been a strong influence from any professional team there. College basketball is the important thing. Basketball was an afterthought in Dallas when Cuban took over the Mavericks, much like football has in Kentucky.
Now I can't say I like everything that Cuban has said, after all I am a Spurs' fan, nor can I say I approve of everything he does. I do like what he brought to the Mavericks, though; interest. Dallas basketball became interesting. On top of that, has he threatened to move it to a place that will give him more. I mean the SuperSonics may not be long for Seattle, and a lot of other teams threaten or attempt extortion to the fans. As far as I know Mr. Cuban has never done so. That is a blessing.
I don't think that firing Avery Johnson as the coach was the right move, but it is his team. I tend to think that Jason Kidd is over-rated, but I could be a bit biased. I can easily see where Kidd would have had trouble following the direction of Coach Johnson, as Kidd was a better point guard than Avery Johnson was when he played, at least as far as skills.
As to Johnson not being able to change up the game or adjust to an opposing coach's changes? I can't speak to that. It may be that he does have that problem. If so, maybe a little more seasoning would be good. Maybe he just needs to realize that he can make adjustments, instead of depending entirely on his players to do so. I don't know. I think Avery Johnson proved to be a good coach, maybe not a great coach, but at least a good coach. I'm sure he will find another position elsewhere, and we will see how it works out.

kac824 is absolutely right - Cuban is the problem. What a freaking buffoon he is. First, his old antics of running onto the floor during fights. Brilliant. Too bad some big players weren't allowed to kick his head in. It could only have helped. Then he makes his stupid, anti-American, anti-war movie. You know what Marky? Stick to ruining your basketball team with trades for washed up wife-beaters and don't ruin our country with your anti-American tripe. What a jackass. He deserves to have his ass kicked in the first round every year. What's he got now? A 65 year old Jason Kidd who got totally smoked all series by the future of the NBS - Chris Paul. The Flop (Dirk Nowitski) who flails almost as well as Manu(re) Ginobli of San Antonio does. Eric "Fat Ass" Dampier, The Toker and Brandon Bass who was one of the better players in the playoffs. I guess Jason Terry is okay. And I thought Eddie Jones and Juwan Howard were dead by now. Weren't they both in the ABA? Retire already, old timers. Dallas has The Flop and Brandon Bass and lots of overpaid, over the hill players. And an asshole owner who deserve the ruined team he has created.

I think Cuban did an unbelievable thing in turning the Mavs around. They were a doormat when he took them over. That being said, maybe he has worn his welcome. Some of the over active owners like himself need to know when to back off.
On another note. This is the NBA. How much coaching is involved? Is it more directing than coaching? How important is the coach in the NBA?
