The TRUTH is this, that while Phillips may be able to play both safety positions and some cornerback, he is penciled in as a Free Safety, and Knight as Strong Safety, and we NEEDED A TRUE FS BADLY CAUSE WE HAD NONE TILL THE DRAFT, so i would expect to see them both on the field at the same time when the season starts. Knight will contend against fellow strong safeties like last year's other 7th round pick Michael Johnson who despite some physical talents is still very raw, and the most recent starter in slow-as-hell James Butler. I believe Knight will have the edge in experience even if he is older, and will start at SS.
Kenny Phillips will only compete against an undrafted FS named Nehemiah Warrick, who went undrafted for a reason, as despite being a VERY hard hitter and has the body of a monster safety, he has accomplished little in college and has questionable instinct, playing ability at the higher levels, and has stone hands, so forget about interceptions. Warrick showed little except that he just can't play in college period, so we can expect much less from him in the pros, and i think he has no chance at beating out Kenny for the FS spot.
With all that said, Knight isn't battling Kenny Phillips, they are both gonna be the Giants' starting safeties.
