The Bengals are on a list of teams that former MVP Shaun Alexander is calling. He says he would like to come home to finish out his career.
I think it would be a good idea if he were to come here at a reasonable salary thats incentive based. The guy is 31 years old and just past his prime, but is only 2 seasons removed from his MVP year. With Irons looking nowhere near being ready, it might be worth a try. What do you guys think?

it is definitely worth a shot..they cannot be asking too much for him especially since they brought in turner this year..with how injuries seem to haunt the Bengals backfield, why not try it..he would still be a great 3rd down back if worst comes to worst

I don't think there's a chance Mike Brown will spend that kind of money.

I would love to see Alexander finish out his career as a Bengal. He would be an improvement over Rudi in my mind. You put Alexander, Watson, Irons, and Dorsey out there it looks like a solid backfield. The only downside is that MB would never spend that kind of money. But maybe Alexander is content with the money he has made over the years and would be okay with coming here for cheap just so he can finish out his career back home by his family.

alexander seems like the type that would be happy to play for his hometown even if he does make a little less..make his contract incentitive heavy and hopefully he comes in and breaks Mike Brown's pocketbook..i would like to see alexander, rudi share time..that would help both backs stay healthy and take off some pressure on the passing game especially if chad keeps acting like a bitch

What a great pick up he would be. He would really make the running attack so much better. It would be great for him to end his career in Cincinnati close to home . COme on Mike Brown open that tight purse up and sign him.

I'm not really that excited forthem to sign Alexander. Not only were his best years back in 05-06, those years came when he was running behind pro-bowlers Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson. I like the Bengals line, but they're not on the level of those two guys during their prime. Recently he's been injury prone, and tentative hitting holes at the line. Signing an over the hill big name RB is something that Dan Snyder would do...not Mike Brown.

I agree. I doubt this will happen. But if it did for a reasonable price I wouldn't be too upset. There are plenty of examples of RBs who everyone thought were washed up and that only motivated them to prove everyone wrong.
I am praying Chris Perry can come back healthy and if so I think we would have some VERY talented running backs to compete for carries. I do agree that we don't have the best O-Line ESPECIALLY for run-blocking too. But you never know.

The only way I see this happening is if they are done with Rudi and cut him, then sign Alexandar to a deal worth maybe one million with incentives, but the Bengals never cut overpriced, past their prime veterans they hold them tight and let them live out their contract to the detriment of salary cap flexiblity.
Players that should be cut or restructered to cost less.
Willie- restructure
Rudi- cut
Dexter Jackon- cut
John Thorton- cut
These guys marked cut could be gone and money saved. They are all making more than they are worth and have depth behind them. Thorton could be brought back for less but he's done. Jackson is old, and Rudi will never be the same. Cincy needs to be more like the successful teams, New England, and let go of aging stars and bring in those that fit the scheme for less money. Darwin Walker and Ian Scott are both as good as Thorton and just signed elsewhere for much less money. If you cut these player then the cap space would have been there to trade chad and build more depth. What do I know? I just watch other teams do what I wish the Bengals would.

I crack up at you people that think Rudi Johnson is done. He had an injury last year. Hamstring injuries are season long nagging injuries. If Rudi is past that then I have all of the confidence he will return to form. Now, I may not argue that he has more than two or three years left, but he should still be considered a top notch RB. Bringing in Shaun Alexander would not be a bad idea, but only for a small salary. Shaun could push Chris Perry and Kenny Irons if they are both remotely ready to go. Shaun can still catch out of the backfield if anything.

I think getting Alexander would be a good idea for the Bengals at a certain price. I still think Rudi is the number one back but Alexander could help share some of the carries and both might be able to make it the whole year without getting hurt. You also don't know when Irons is coming back and also if Perry can stay healthy.

Not only that but Shaun could help the rest of the team get right with God. No character issues with this guy, even though he does get the sissy tag for avoiding contact.

Alexander still has a lot of money coming from Seattle. He was waived and still is entitled to his money. I could see him coming into Cincinnati for a salary way below what everyone expects.

I know Shaun's career is coming towards an end, but I do think a Rudi-Shuan combo could be very effective. There is no way the Bengals are going to spend a lot of money on him, and hopefully he is not expecting something like that. The Bengals need more guys like Shuan Alexander on their team. He is an ideal role model both on and off the field. I'm certain he would provide a positive influence to everyone on the team. Hopefully both sides can come to an agreement and he can finish out his career close to home.

Considering our injury problems in the past, and how Marvin wants to get back to the running game, Alexander would make and interesting addition. No disrespect to Rudi, but it can only help. Like many of you said, he's only 2 years removed from an MVP season. I think it would be a long shot for him to come home and play. He will get significant offers from other teams that the Bengals won't be able to compete with. However, I would not be comfortable with the idea that Perry will contribute this year. He has been out a long time and honestly I'm still surprised the Bengals have held onto him. Irons won't be ready and there is no reason to rush him. Dorsey and Watson are capeable backups but not game-breakers. Alexander is a very good receiver out of the backfield and would be an upgrade. Also, his character is spotless.
Although it would be nice to have two big profile guys in the backfield, I don't see it happening. Alexander will want to be a starter and paid as such. He's a good guy, but he's not going to financially hurt himself by signing with the Bengals.
