Just heard that ESPN has hired Don Cherry to be a hockey analyst and all I can think of is, WHY???

ESPN's coverage of hockey sucks, no where what it used to be.  Of course back then they carried the hockey games.

Any thoughts???

It's nice that they announce he'll they fail to mention that it will be for about 30 seconds a night.  What with poker and all what are the chances of actually seeing him?

I haven't watched ESPN since football ended. Maybe I'll look to find him on YouTube...but for the amount of time he'll be on, is it worth it?

Go Red Wings!

So does that mean sportscenter's coverage of hockey will increase from 60 seconds to 90 seconds?

Cherry = Melrose X 683547

Nice move ESPN. I love the vid of him telling the golden Brett about his NO GOAL last year during the SC finals.

Although I don't always agree with what Don Cherry says, he's got great hockey knowledge and a great personality for ESPN.  People will watch this guy and either love him or hate him, but still watch him regardless.  He'll bring a flare to ESPN that they need in regards to their hockey coverage.

I say its a good move.

I rarely watch ESPN for hockey coverage so kinda worthless if you ask me.  Secondally I hate Cherry, he's an idiot.  He always has a hardon bias for Canadian teams to win.  Also he seems to have something against players who have skill unless they are goons.  Anytime I hear him call someone a "sweetie", makes me want to punch him in the throat.

I can only hope that he wows people enough that his segments get bigger and subsequently hockey gets more attention. Getting the games back on ESPN and off of Versus would be wonderful. I don't care if the announcers are morons, at least I could watch those at home.

Actually, Red, I liked most of the guys who called the NHL on ESPN.  Most people love Gary Thorne and Bill Clement....and I was quite fond of Steve Levy (and I think he had Darren Pang with him).

But I'll take anything to make those clueless SportsCenter anchors be able to pronounce household hockey names.

Who said hockey was done forever on ESPN? It could be, but check out this link.

Cherry's Canadian bias will not matter for this years playoffs, last time I checked Pittsburgh, Detroit, Dallas and Philadelphia (not so sure about Philly tho, just kidding Flyers fans!) were all in the United States.
